Does anyone have instructions on how to make one of those cakes that is made up of cupcakes that are iced all together as one big design? I assume you just ice them, make a border around the edges and then decorate but I was just wondering if there is more to it than that or if there is a certain way they should be arranged.
Thanks!
It's really easy you just have to make sure they are as close toghether as you can get them. You can make any design with them that you want to.
It's easiest to ice them if you stagger the cupcakes. Then you have to pipe icing (A lot of icing) into all the cracks/holes, until they are filled to the top, then you can just ice over it, and looks smooth as a cake. I've only done one before, so I'm sure there are people that can explain it better, and maybe give you some better tips. Try to find one that looks really nice, and PM the artist..

Thaks for the tutorial parable. I'm such a visual person as well. I can copy anything if I see it.

If you interlock the cupcakes and make sure they are pushed together closely there is no need to fill in holes. The method you described can be very messy.
You can add a small dab of icing on the bottom to hold the cupcakes in place. I only do this on the cupcakes that are on the border. You can either use a 789 tip to ice or a spatula. If using a spatual just just a big glob of icing on and smooth it out.
Decorate... then add the border last.
To me the whole point of these cupcake cakes is for ease of serving and not having the mess. I would think squishing them as close together as Parable describes would be the best way. You're trying to get as little icing onto the cupcake wrappers as possible so the kids dont wind up a mess. Her method looks clean and neat. Thanks for the pics.
wow! beautiful...I will have to get over my fear and try this with a simple design... can we add fresh fruit on top or is this a no-no?

I would think it would be OK if the fruit is not runny.
