Here is a link to the cake that my DD likes. She would like something similar. How would you do the top border?

It is cake #2262 the purple 21.

I have a couple of weeks to practice.

Thanks so much.

This site does have some terrific borders.

It is piping done over piping, without studying it some more I am not sure what piping is over top of the other piping.. but hopfully this helps you to start to break it down.

It looks like elongated shells overpiped on top of each other with the green "squiggled" on top of that. You might ask Thanh Thanh, she does a lot of work in a similar style.

Thank you! What tip would you use?

There are a lot of really pretty cakes on there. (Some very naughty ones too, I at first thought 18+ meant the NUMBER 18 and up!)

Use any of the open star tips (18, 21, 32, etc.) I took a class with Marsha Winbeckler not all that long ago and she did similar borders to that. In fact, she's writing a book on it (don't know if it's out yet or not.)

To me, it looks like the tip 18 is used to make an elongated twisted rope that tapers down to a single line, in a c-shell shape.

Then over pipe with a 16 for just a c-shell shape.

(Here's where it's iffy for me) In some places, it looks like there are 2 graduated star tips over-piped, in some it looks like there are 3 layers of the star tip). If there are three layers of star over-piping, maybe a tip 14 would work.

For the top of the over-piping, I would say a tip 3 was used. Starting at the wide end do a twisted rope, then taper to a single line.

Hope this helps. icon_biggrin.gif

Those are beautiful cakes, very Mary - Fordish. She is a fantastic piper and her books are ususally easy to find. I have a few books in my collection for one day when I decide I need a special border to set off something simple.

That video was spot on.

I will have to look for Mary Fordand Marsha Winbeckler books.

And yes it does in some places look like there are 3 layers. I will have to practice to see what I can come up with.

I never even thought of using graduated tips to do it-thanks for the hint.

Thanks again for the help.

Yep definately Mary Ford styleicon_smile.gif Love her work!

You probably won't ever get to look exactly like that because they use very small bags and actually turn the bag around in their hand as they pipe. It's colled a rolled barrell (or something similar).

Hi
We call them Scrolls and they are done with a 44 star tube in and 18 inch pipping bag, then over pipped with a colour from a rolled grease proof bag and yes they are built up in 3 layers.

Mark

Great cakes and great borders! I seem to get stuck on the same ole borders and don't try new things very often. I may practice some of these on pans this weekend!
