Smooth Buttercream??fondant Edges??

How do you get the sides of a buttercream cake so smooth with no spatula marks on it?Also what do you use to cut fondant to get a smooth edge?I am new here and just what to tell all of you thanks what a great website.

to smooth my buttercream I use a bench scraper. I bought it on the kitchen gadget wall at target. It is a metal tool thats about 6" square with a handle on one end of rolled metal. I dip it in boiling water, wipe the water off and "melt" the icing smooth with it by turning my turntable as I hold the scraper steady. Theres a great article on the upside down technique for smooth icing that will help you visualize what I'm talking about along with a great tutorial on how to get a perfectly flat smooth top and crisp edge. The scraper they show can be found in the paint section of the hardware store.

I wasn't sure what you meant about the fondant. When I trim the bottom I use a very sharp paring knife. Does that answer your question?

I also use a bench scraper on the sides and then Viva, and then computer paper. Check out this thread for more details:

and to cut the bottom edges on fondant cakes, I use a pizza cutter, works great for me!
