I have been asked to do a cookie decorating demo for a private Christmas party. (baking pointers, Royal icing, run sugar, etc.)

I have no idea what to charge. An hourly rate? a flat fee?

Another question was: will I have basic supplies available for purchase? How much mark-up? (this being my first one, its not like I'm in the business of selling supplies, and not sure I want to... but....)

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

This is my opinion, if I was attending the demo...I wouldnt buy supplies separately. I would like to take home a couple of completed items. So I would have enough cookies made for each person to make some and take them home, for price include the cost of items they'll need to make the cookie-disposable bags, couplers tips, cookie bag, stick if making pops so each person can have their own, figure your cost for ingreds and time in prepping, I would include a list of suggested items they would need to buy. The party will likely be for a scheduled time, but figure out for yourself how long you think it will take you to prep, bake, demo and let newbies try it and then factor in what you'd like to be paid per hour plus the supplies and give the host/ess a flat rate.

I have done cookie demos, they are a lot of prep work. One of the things I did was made a cookie display board. I used scrapbooking paper, made different back rounds and laid the appropriate cookies on the board. The board itself was one that kids use for school projects, it folds in thirds for easy transport. That displays your talent and creates lots of interest, even before you begin demoing.

I did not sell supplies, but they were very interested in the cookie and icing recipes.

I can tell you lots more about what I did, if you want to pm me. It would make a very long post

Thanks, each cookie was bagged, so folks could pick them up and look at them. A lot of them I had saved when I baked them, so I did not have to do many "onesies". It absolutely amazes me how long a cookie looks good.
