I was just curious how this works. I would think the fondant would be too heavy to stick to the buttercream alone? I have always stuck fondant to fondant because I was to scared my decorations would peel the buttercream off if I used fondant on buttercream. Anyone have any suggestions or experience?

It really depends on how heavy and how tall they are. If they are small and flat you shouldn't have any problems. If they are heavy or tall I would secure them to a sucker stick or skewer and poke into the cake for stability. HTH

I do this constantly. 99% of my cakes are butter cream and many have some sort of fondant accent. It sticks. I chill my cakes before delivery and that helps seal the fondant to the bc. HTH.

These are my fondant-on-BC cakes, applied with BC on the back of the fondant pieces, just so you can see the size/weight of the ones I've done that held up ok:

Thank you very much everyone. I see that its ok with smaller decorations and caked would you attempt to do stipes around a whole cake or leave it minimal?

Hi all. icon_smile.gif What do you use to make the fondant accents stick on crusted buttercream? Water? Piping gel? Thanks in advance!

I do mainly buttercream cakes and fondant decorations on them. I've had no problems. If the fondant pieces are dry, you'd need to attach them with buttercream or glue, etc. If the fondant pieces are't dried, then just add a little water to the back. They'll stick just fine. You can also use candy melts if they are dry. Hope this helps.

All of my decorated cakes are buttercream with fondant accents, unless the customer just prefers all fondant. I just let my cake chill for a few minutes then decorate. For larger, heavier pieces like bows, or balls, I attach those with candy melts. HTH! thumbs_up.gif

I am new to this site and just wanted to say thanks for the advice above! I am doing my son's Mario Bros themed birthday cake this coming week and was loathe to think of covering a cake with fondant due to my lack of experience in that dept - then i thought of the fondant deco on top of bc icing angle. Then I imagined the fondant decorations slowly sliding down the cake on the way into the party. Then I imagined myself throwing the cake in the trash and running to the nearest grocery store for some cupcakes...anyway thanks! I plan on perusing the site more, lots of great info here! icon_biggrin.gif

I do buttercream covered cakes with fondant details all of the time. Nothing to be worried about. I just wet the fondant a little if my icing has already crusted, and stick them on. You'll be fine, and so will the cake!

Should I use a crusting buttercream for this, or would SMBC work? I have never really worked with SMBC, but have heard great things about how smooth you can get the cakes.

Exactly as ypierce82 said.   I have done b'cxream w/fondant details as well.  You can use a crusting b'cream - just pipe an open circle of b'cream on the back of the decoration and push it onto the cake :)  I usually use a tip 3 and heavy pressure for that ring.   I have not used SMBC but you certainly can get a smooth b'cream iced cake w/a little work.   Try this recipe:  https://www.cakecentral.com/recipe/22469/2-icing

I do fondant decorations on all different buttercreams...American, SMBC, IMBC. It works for all of them. And you can store them in the fridge with the fondant decorations on as well- no problem!

The last cake I posted was buttercream with a couple of large, heavy fondant pieces attached.  I used melted chocolate (because I always have it on hand) to stick them in place and I had no problem who so ever.

Thank you kindly, The MrsWalker1!

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well fondant pieces hold up on buttercream cakes.  I know I was surprised!
