Learn how to paint tulip sugar paste flower petals from cake designer Amy Noelle in this Howcast cake decorating tutorial, part 4 of a 4-part series.

After all the petals have dripped dried, it’s time to paint them. Tulips come in so many different colors. I’m going to paint mine with a little bit of hot pink.

But when I paint it, I want to leave it so that it looks like a variegated flower. So I’m not going to paint over the whole entire thing. I’m going to start at the base and let it fan out and be a little bit faded on the edges.

I’m painting with petal dust. So I’ve dipped my paint brush into my petal dust and have brushed off the extra. I can always add more paint. I can’t always take it off.

I’m working with my flowers upside down and just adding a little bit of paint all the way around. Again, I’m leaving the edges a little bit white and having more concentrated color at the end.

You can decide if you want want an all over color or to do it like I’m doing. I’m going to paint on the inside, as well as the same thing. Going far down into the base of petal and adding more color at the base than I am at the top.

I work all the way around the flower. The other thing that I want to do is to add a little bit of color into my center of my flower. I’m going to add a teeny tiny little bit of green just on the edge, just so it looks like there’s a little bit of pollen on the center of that flower.

And after it’s been painted, it’s been dusted. It’s ready to go straight on a cake.
