||I am 52 years old and started on cakes about a year ago. I had spent an enormous amount of money on a cake for my first grandchild's baby shower. It looked very nice but we couldn't eat it. It was supposed to be red velvet, but it was light salmon colored and so dry and crumbly that it literally fell apart when you cut into it. The fondant was hard as a rock and so thick that I had to use my husband's filet knife to cut through it. I was devestated. My sister-in-law kept bugging me to try and make one myself, so I did; for her birthday. It turned out really nice and tasted fantastic. I also discovered how much fun it was to see her face when she got her cake. My husband has brain cancer and I work full time at a government job that is extremely stressful. Doing cakes has turned into a form of therapy for me and I LOVE it. I certainly am not turning out cakes like some of the ones on this site, but it doesn't matter. I love doing this.
