The cake that shouldn't have been - but turned out okay! Only the grace of God held it together! At 2 am last night a chunk of the 2nd layer just fell off - and it was glued back with buttercream. The cake was a disaster the whole way through - layers that wouldn't stay up, fondant troubles, monkeys falling apart, poked a hole in the side with one of the dowels.... AUGH! There is a reason these are also called Mad Hatter - that's what you end up being at the end - MAD! Thanks to everyone for keeping me sane

This is my first attempt to make topsy-turvy style cake. It is time consuming, but I enjoyed very much and learned in the process a lot. Everything is MMF except the crown which is MMF mixed with some gum paste.

This was my first topsy-turvy; it was actually my first attempt at any stacked cake:) I used the Melvira method to smooth out the buttercream - the top layer clearly wouldn't crust, so I couldn't smooth it! The cutouts are all fondant. I made this for a friend's birthday, and she's allergic to red 40 dye which made the color choosing process pretty limited, but I think it turned out alright. Thanks to everyone who offered me advice in taking this one on!

For my hubby's 30th birthday! Bottom layer is chocolate cake filled with lemon buttercream and raspberry preserves and frosted with lemon buttercream. The second layer is cardamom spice cake with crusting cream cheese icing. The top is made of rice krispie treats covered with mmf. The golf balls are made from candy melts. The golf bags are royal icing. The tees are real. This was my first time doing a topsy turvy cake. I used the tutorial from this site - it was fairly easy, but very time-consuming.

This was done for a 10 and 11 year old for thier birthday. They were having a dance party and their mom wanted it to be like a street dance. The bottom layer was a brick wall with their names one it. She wanted it colorful. The bottom boarders are gum balls. The kids loved it.

This was a bit unusual for me for a yound client. It was her second birthday, but she wanted the bright primary colours...not pastels. A little girl after my own heart!

For a 3 year old's "Un-Birthday" Party (her family was relocating b/c of work a month before her actual birthday, so early party with her friends). First attempt at topsy-turvy - I would've placed the polka dots higher on the top tier (didn't compensate for placing that tier down into the second one). Lesson learned! Otherwise, it wasn't as difficult as I was expecting. It's iced in buttercream with fondant accents. I was so pleased!

This wedding was SO themed and fun! The table were all named after counties in Ireland, there was green glitter on the tables, shamrocks everywhere, green hydrangeas as floral bouquet centrepieces, gold coins and this crazy cake right in the middle. I used a dark chocolate NFSC as the topper inscribed with the bride & groom's name, gold chocolate coins, gumpaste shamrocks on wires, gumpaste gold "buckle" on the bottom tier. The cake was a 6"/9"/12" with quadruple-layers inside. Carrot, Choc & Banana tiers.

This is my grandaughter's birthday cake for a "rock star" themed party--it's topsy turvy, fondant harlequin, chocolate cheetah spots and a fondant "record" on top (she didn't know what a "record" was!)

My first topsy turvy. Okay, I guess. Many things happend during the process of the cake--I still have a headache... LOL This was for my daughter's 4th b-day. She LOVED the cake, so that is all that matters. Okay, three tiers: 6-7-8 and strawberry for the top, 7-8-9 and yellow for the middle and 8-9-10 and chocolate for the bottom. Each tier represents each one of the Doodlebops and then edible image plaques on top.

This was for my youngest daughter's 5th bday. She loved it. I was nervous about the top sliding off, so I countersunk half of the top layer into the bottom one and kept it in the fridge so everything set just fine. It did mess up my diamonds a bit but none of the 5 year olds noticed! Everything was BC except for the fondant diamonds.

This was my first tilted cake and I had nightmares about waking up the next day to find the top layer had slid right off! No problems though. But I think I will try using a dowel next time just so I can get some sleep. This was done in all BC except for the stripes which were fondant and the dots which were colored chocolate. This was for my older daughter's 7th bday and it was a big hit with everyone. Such a relief!

I did this cake for my dd's birthday's. My baby turned one and my oldest 5 so we did a Ladybug and Butterfly theme. I covered the layers in MMF with buttercream and royal icing accents. And the Ladybugs were MMF also! The Cupcake was carved out of a 8" round and covered in white chocolate melts and topped with buttercream and a fondant Cherry! The bottom layer was yellow, the middle strawberry and the top confetti.

That was a failed trial to do a topsy turvy cake. The good thing is that I know what I did wrong, so next time I will avoid it.
Sorry about the missing small balls on the left, the kids ate them before I took the picture!!!

This was my first attempt (and maybe my last!) at a "Mad Hatter" or "Topsy Turvy" cake. I charged $3 a serving, but will charge more like $4 or $5 per serving if I ever try it again! Tiers are 10, 8 and 6 inch. They were covered in buttercream and fondant. Accents, flowers, leaves, and bumblebee are all fondant.

Cake for the Childrens Easter Party at the Firehouse. Everyone was petrified the cake was falling and could not understand how it was done. Those who knew, just laughed. The cake and the cupcakes were a hit!

I made this Little Mermaid cake for my friends daughter. This is a topsy turvey cake with plastic figurines. On the side of the cake is a fondant wave, and on the top for the rocks, is Lemon Meringue candies that are carved and painted (but edible).

Well, it didn't turn out how I wanted it to, but in the end everybody loved it at the bridal shower. My first mistake was that I was in too much of a hurry and didn't have time to freeze the layers after sculpting so it got kind of smooshed. Not bad for a first timer though. Does anybody have any topsy-turvy secrets they can share??

This cake was done for a special birthday party. The recipient is a gardener so bugs were requested. The design was partially taken from a cake seen in a local cake shop window, but modified to be more cartoonish. Thanks to andrealinn for bug inspiration. I really enjoyed doing this one despite the late night!
