Our little town has an annual festival featuring the Sputnik (it was a piece of a Russian space shuttle that hit one of the roads in our town back in 1960). Last year I couldn't enter the cake contest because I had my baby on that day (I was tempted though)... so this year I just had to enter it. I made a lemon cake (10" & 6" layers with the ball cake on top). I used a strawberry shortcake and covered it to make a space shuttle and then a spaceship with an alien inside out of fondant... I used a few ideas from on here so thank you!!! I was up against 18 other cakes and they judged based on taste and creativity. I got a trophy & $250!!! This was the first big cash prize I've received so I was pretty excited! I passed on making a cupcake cake for a birthday party (it would've only made me $50 :( I'm glad I made the choice to do this cake instead!!!

The lady wasn't sure what she wanted for her little boy's 1st birthday as she said he was too young to really be 'into' anything... who doesn't love space? So that's what I did... handmade little spacemen and spaceships... she was delighted and has booked me for her other son's birthday... Bob The Builder! ... better start researching that one!

This is all chocolate cake with italian meringe buttercream sculpted and covered in satin ice, then airbrushed and finished off with gumpaste wings and plastic domes from product packaging(light bulb packages, misc. toy packaging...dollar store is a great place to go look for these). It took soooo long but I was very excited about the way it turned out, I hope you like it !

This was done for a space exploration presentation given by a NASA employee. Shuttle and world were carved and filled with BC and covered in fondant with fondant accents. The shuttle was 18" long. Bottom board was covered in black fondant and sprinkled with edible holographic glitter. The shuttle was placed on a motorized rotating arm that "orbited the earth". TFL!

Friend had a 40th birthday space theme - the cake is fondant decorated with astronaut helmets. My third cake in fondant, my first tiered cake - still a lot of perfecting to be done! Totally mucked up on the size of the cake boards - ended up getting them too big for each tier so there was always an edge to try and cover. Disaster! Oh well, cake was chocolate with ganache and still tasted good.

Chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream. Carved out of 4 8 inch rounds and a dome baked in a bowl; the crown is built up with rice krispie treats. Structurally, it was one of my hardest cakes. I wish it were a little neater (especially since this design shows every flaw!) but was generally happy with it.

My second real attempt at a full up cake. My son was having a space-themed party, so I got on CC and showed him all the space cakes I could find. We combined his favorite elements and voila. He was beyond thrilled with the results, which made all the effort (like 9 HOURS!) TOTALLY worth it. First time at MMF, first time WASC, first time buttercream (indebis version), first time gum paste. It was all DELICIOUS! This website is a treasure trove and I'm totally addicted. Thanks for looking! And thanks CCers for the ideas and WEALTH of information!

This was all buttercream and the ship was covered in fondant. The little people were made from an edible image. The fins and the thingy on the top were made from RKT. I hate doing kids cakes they are so time consuming,
When you see the faces smile that kinda helps makes it worth my time.

Made this for son's 5th bday. He wanted anything SW but had to use Galactic Heroes figures so came up with the ship plus Death Star. My first ball cake, not happy. Was falling apart & choc frosting everywhere. Looked cool when candles lit in it, though, like death star was really collapsing! Both cakes covered in fondant.

This was custom drawn for me to make. Her son was turning 2 and she wanted everything on the cake to be in quantities of 2. It was a fun cake to make.

This was for a man's 75th birthday, and he worked for NASA for 35+years, so the cake was designed with that in mind. I love how the colors turned out.

This was a 2-tiered cake with a 2-layer 10" round base and a 1-layer 8" round on top of it and a "half ball" planet for the top. It was covered with a blue fondant and the planets and stars were cut out of fondant and attached. The red and white tiles were cut from fondant and placed one at a time around the base. The rocket was hand molded and entirely edible except for the sucker stick holding it up. This cake was inspired by Arnett18 who did the "original" that we found here on CC!

I love this cake, it was sooo simple to make, but I am proud of the way it turned out!! It is a double layer 12 inch heart cake, both layers are white pound cake. It is filled and covered with vanilla butter cream, then home made fondant. The cake was made to celebrate a Man's 50th birthday, the customer was thrilled with the cake! (December, 2009). After searching for star trek cakes on this site, I came across tenmeows cake, which was emailed to me with this order! So, this wasn't my original idea, thank you to tenmeow's picture for the inspiration! :)

BC and CBC covered cake. Wall-e, Eve, and Mo figures are plastic. Earth is covered with fondant, with BC clouds, and Fire extinguisher is fondant. In the movie, the character on the Earth (Mo) was always cleaning... so there is a clean streak behind Mo on the back of the planet. Constructive Criticism is appreciated! :) Thank you!

This is a cake my sister and I did for a little boy's birthday. The rocket ship and the moon are marble cake and the cupcakes are vanilla. All have vanilla buttercream frosting and the moon is also covered in fondant. The stars on top of the cupcakes and on the cake board are fondant. The blue cake board is a foam core board. Inspiration came from a similar cake I saw on Flickr. The mom said the little boy just stared at it and said "Wow".

This cake feeds about 40 so its fairly large...a real tripod with a base attached to it...a bit of styrofoam to round out the bottom of the scope. Its not as perfectly straight as I like...it seems to dip slightly on each end, maybe I had trouble smoothing the icing or something, not sure what happened. I think I could have done the eyepiece neater too. Hopefully the customer likes it! Delivery scares me just a tad but it should go okay!
