Inspired by bakerella! These were red velvet with cream cheese frosting. I made these for a wii party--made little miis of my friends and then reproduced them in cupcake form!

Here's my second cake! The first time I covered an entire cake in fondant. I think it turned out quite well, except I had an issue with the spacing of the buttons. Next time I will make sure I have enough room for everything!

My first fondant cake ever! I was (and still am) surprised at how it turned out, as I've never taken a class or had training. LOL. For my then-boyfriend/now-husband on his birthday. The cake is Black Forrest with Cherry filling. The weird looking bit in the background is a "Bread Board", its what electrical engineers build circuits on. :)

11x15 all buttercream. My nephew has become obsessed with the old-school nintendo version of Zelda and asked for a Zelda cake for his birthday. This one was fun!

I made this cake for my son's birthday. I used a 14" and 9" round cake for the bottom two teirs. For Mario I used a ball pan for his head and a small 7" (I think) round for his body. I rounded the top for his shoulders. I used a picture as a template for the facial features. I made all the figures out of fondant. The head started to tilt. That was the only problem. This was my first attempt at something like this. I was quite pleased with the result. Thanks for all the great ideas on CC!

This is a one layer 12" chocolate and one layer 8" white. Frosted and filled with buttercream. All accents are candy clay. Sonic and the Nintendo DS are also made with Rice Krispy treats. Unfortunately Sonic was suicidal and jumped off the cake on the way to the party. I did my best to fix him but stupid me didn't bring anything with me. Ended up borrowing a pair of scissors and using a juice box straw to reinforce his leg. I jammed the wire with the red ball on it into his head to stabilize him and crossed my fingers. Nobody really cared so I decided not to either.

I made this for my son's birthday -- he wanted his toys included on the cake. I did the pipe on top with rice krispie treats -- which you can see through the fondant. Does the fondant layer just need to be thick? I've never used RKT before and wanted to try it.

Buttercream, with fondant accents. The figures are plastic. The pipes are RKT covered in fondant. I neglected to take into account the width of the cake, so the pipes were a little too big, but they worked. The goombas, mushrooms, turtle shells, were all made from fondant. This cake was a lot of fun to make!

Most of the decorating needed to be done in buttercream other than the characters and mushroom because the birthday boy had an allergy to marshmallows. This was hard for me as I absolutely love decorating with mmf and have never tried any other fondany recipes. He loved it, which in turn made all the fuss worth it!
