This was the first cake in my Wilton fondant / gumpaste class. I didn't really like the design suggestions from the Wilton book, so I took my own liberties and practiced what I needed to learn! It is the first time I've made a drape, or fondant bead border. I also am learning to perfect my rolled roses, but I'm not there yet! And best of all, I made my own fondant for the first time and it turned out great! It's the first time I've ever worked with fondant and NOT had ANY folds or tucks at the bottom!

Wanted to practice fondant drapes, so here one is. I learned a thing or two, so I guess the time wasn't wasted. Taking it in to work for the intern of the month tomorrow. Spice cake.

A special birthday cake for my grannys suprise party. She's had very few birthday cakes in her life so I wanted to make sure this was the best. Where I'm from most people have never even heard of fondant so my uncle thought it was a fake centerpiece until we cut it. Three tiers covered in fondant w/ fondant roses and swags painted w/ pearl dust!

Gumpaste fantasy flowers, everything else fondant. A version of a cake I saw in Wilton's Tiered Cakes book. Dipped crumpled wax paper in thinned fondant for the texture. Dusted the drape with Old Gold luster dust.

My take on Sugarshack's beautiful design. Buttercream with fondant & gumpaste flowers and fondant drape. The cross is gumpaste, made with a cookie cutter.

This is a pound cake with strawberry filling and Choco-pan wedding white fondant--although it looked more like ivory to me. The drape was made to match the bride's dress--every other fold was brushed with luster dust. I actually attended this wedding and ended up cutting the cake. It was very enlightening seeing the innards--made me realize just how important dowels really are. I definitely need to dowel more!!

Not really a first time cake from a class as I am teaching myself, but this was my first time using real fondant (DH and friends don't seem to like MMF) and first practice buttercream roses. Definately need more practice for both fondant and roses! Can't seem to get it right!

this wedding reception was outside, under a tent in 80+ degree weather....everything went well, but the MMF drapes kept sticking to themselves and it was hard to get them to fan out.....14,12,10 & 8" tiers....alternating chocolate/choc. chip & yellow cake.....covered in ivory BC.....gumpaste roses and leaves......MMF pearls made with a CK pearl maker and dusted with super pearl dust.....TFL!

This one was done the day after my first one, after a 9 hour trip to my parents! Whew... I did this one as a gift for my friend. She went out on a limb letting me do her cake, because I had no experience. Practicing for this cake is what really fueled my passion and got me going on cakes! :) Thanks to cakesbyjess for the inspiration and help! And, thanks to everyone else who offered advise throughout the whole process!

Here is the dummy cake I did for my friends son's open house. They are the same one's I did a cake for last weekend. I have to say that I really like this dummy cake better!!! I used what flowers I could from the previous cake. I also decorated the board that I put the cake on. It is an 18" board covered in fondant. Used some of my patchwork cutters for the impressions and painted them with luster and petal dust and finished it off with a pink ribbon trim.

This is my sister in law's cake. She's getting married in a Castle on Saturday. On Sunday I have another wedding cake to deliver.....to the same Castle for another wedding! It has been a busy week. I am happy to say that I actually made these roses. Flowers scare me to death but I practiced until I was semi pleased with the results! Don't ask me to wire them though...this is as far as I'm prepared to go! hahaha

I made this cake for my own bridal shower. It's a bit over the top
for the event but I wanted to show off. This cake was inspired by one
of Kerry Vincent's cakes. Thanks for viewing.

There was a forum topic this past week about cake photography in which mqguffey suggested putting black fabric as a background at the reception site and then snap your pic of the cake. This is the first time I tried it and the picture came out great. 12,10,and 6 inch tiers done in ivory fondant with blush draping ( that you can't tell by the pic) with dried green hydrangea and variegated ivy.

Fondant with fondant covered styrofoam boosts. The piping is royal and so are the flowers - they were made days before and added dry. Hard to tell in the pic, but the swags are shimmery.
