This was my entry for the Ace of Cakes Totally Awesome Cake Contest last weekend. Duff described my cake as the best Collette knockoff ever, too bad she wasn't my inspriation! I carved the pillows out of square styrofoam blanks and covered with fondant dry brushed with luster dust. The details were created with piping gel & royal icing and clay extruder.

This was a special wedding cake for a man who found love again after his wife passed. He called me himself to make the cake when he had been engaged for 31 hours. I had free reign of colors, flavors, and design and was asked to make it "unique, elegant, and very special". It is for a small wedding, so it is a 10" square french vanilla with strawberry filling, carved and covered with MMF. These are my very first Calla Lilies also. THANKS KATHY for the how-to!!! I think this would be nice for a shower.

Lemon/Orange Mini loaf cakes, frozen and carved into pillow shape. Iced with lemon cream cheese frosting and topped with Lemon MMF pillow cases. These were made to go with a mattress cake for a meeting with a mattress company. I think they'd be great for a kids sleepover as well, customized with kids names.

10" Lemon/orange cake with lemon cream cheese frosting and lemon MMF. Impressons made with mini cutters and #5 tip, side impression with flourescent light cover. Piping with clay gun. Pillows are carved mini loafs with same icing techniques. Made for a meeting with a Mattress company. Could work for a sleep over too!! Or just do the pillows.

I have never carved a cake before (that worked), so this was all new to me. I have never done a tiara either. Thank you to the authors of the pillow cake and tiara articles. They were great! I am looking forward to perfecting these skills. :) This cake was for a church activity for teenage girls.

My first pillow cake...I do not like my tiara (plus its crooked!) and the inside bottom of my pillow is not clean. Plus I was trying to make the quilted look I saw somewhere around this site and could not do it. Should I have made mounds of icing underneath the fondant first?

A pillow cake with gp tiara and duff roses. The tassles didn't work so the roses were a lifesaver! No luster dust because of nut allergies and I wasn't sure what I had was safe. TFL

I spent all kinds of time coloring the perfect three shades of pink for this cake and then when the luster dust went on the variation was all gone. I was so bummed. Oh well. Once again, live and learn.

This is my first pillow cake and I am pleased with it. I learned a lot and I think next time things will go much smoother. I don't love the color combination but I donated it to an organization. Each color represents a quality they strive to have. Anyway, it was a fun cake to make.
It is fondant with handpainted decorations. The tiara is made with gumpaste. Thanks for looking!

I did this cake for my sister's birthday. She loved it but I'm skeptical. I did really learn from this cake though. Its chocolate cake covered in fondant and fondant embelishments. The tiara is made from royal icing. My next cake of this type (and tiara for that matter) will be 100% better!

My first pillow cake, boy do I need practice. I did not carve it near enough so it looks very "boxy". Good thing it was just for family, my neices 5th birthday. I guess I know to carve more next time. Don't remember who it was, but I got the idea from CC, of course. TFL

This is two 8 inch chocolate pound cakes carved using the wonderful instructions for a pillow cake her on CC! covered in MMF brushed with super pearl dust! This was for my boss who they call a princess. I was very happy with it for my first try at a pillow and learned a lot for next time! I wanted to make the tiara but ran out of time since I had 4 cakes this week so I just purchased one!
