Cupcakes for a bug-themed party. The ants are made from black or dark purple jelly beans & frosting legs. The caterpillars are fruit loop-style cereal stacked on their sides for the body and a chocolate easter candy head. The dragonflies have sour gummy worms for the body and wings made of Airhead Xtremes Sour belts cut into oval-ish shapes. A jellybean head finished them off.

This was my first attempt at a gelatine insect. I don't have the mats yet, so I used a flower veiner "thingy" from my gumpaste kit, then cut the gelatine in half with scissors. I was surprised at how easy it was to work with! The body is royal icing, the cake is yellow and it is covered with chocolate BC.

This cake was for a woman retiring from a job studying mushrooms. My co-worker and I made this cake together. We simply carved the sides and middle of a full sheet cake to look a little bumpy and stacked a couple round for the stump. The stump's bark-like texture was made by a dog comb. The mushrooms (my favorite part!) are constructed out of fondant and hand painted with paste color and a water color brush. The rest of the mushroom top is airbrushed. The ant hill is butter cream and covered in graham cracker crumbs. The butterflies and dragon flies are melted chocolate drawn onto parchment.

Thanks to a CC member for the inspiration! Sorry, I can't remember which one... This cake was supposed to have a second layer on it, but I couldn't find my smaller pan and to make it any larger would have been way too many leftovers. But it's a chocolate cake with bc icing. RI gerbera daisies and SP butterflies. The 4 and ladybug are fondant. I wish I had had some brighter colors for the butterlies, but oh, well. TFL!

Inspired by wonderful Christi Friesen I tried to make a dragonfly inspired by her creations. She works in polymer clay so I guess gumpaste behaves a little different.
I have a lot of improvements for the next time but it was fun!
I will probably top a cake with this one of these days . TFL!

Made this cake for a friend who loves lilies she sees on a local lake. I made the flowers, lily pads, leaves, cat tails, and dragonfly out of gum paste and just added them to the buttercream-iced cake.

This is a cake created for a little girls first birthday. Her mom asked for lots of insects on it and to be mostly buttercream other than the insects. There is also pink fondant around the side of the cake to create the wavy effect. This cake looked better done all in fondant i think, but they didnt want it so here it is. Sorry for the quality, my camera is on the fritz. Thanks for looking.

This was ordered by a friend for Teri Hatcher's halloween party. She asked by to depict Coraline and to include the dragonflies which were voiced by Teri's daughter Emerson. The bottom 2 cakes were 10" rounds of red velvet made to look like buttons. Tier separators were made to look like spools of thread. top tier was 6" of pumpkin cake with maple buttercream and done to look lke a Tim Burtonesq garden. The head was craved from styrofoam and covered in fondant mixed with marzipan. All other accents made with fondant and/or GP. My friend said Teri stopped in her tracks when she saw it.

8" square decorated in buttercream with gumpaste booties, dragonfly and bow, and fondant polka dots and flowers. Design was inspired by the baby's bedding (Dragonfly Dreams by Jo Jo). My first try at baby booties--they're not flawless, but I was very happy with how they turned out for my first try and how easily they went together! I used Sugarshack's awesome baby bootie tutorial found on her blog (thank you Sharon!!!), and the life size baby bootie cutters from Jem. TFL!

This cake was for a little girl who loves salamanders and nature. She wanted a pond theme but nothing too "cartoony" so this was my best effort at realistic. I really liked the way it came out. All the figures, grasses, reeds and rocks are gp or mmf or 50/50. The cat-tails are fondant on bamboo skewers (couldn't figure out how to make it all edible and support the weight of the cat-tail- ah well). The big rock with the salamander is rkt shaped to the corner of the cake and covered in fondant. 10" x10" choc fudge cake with choc bc. This cake was made exactly one year from the first cake I tried decorating so that made this one kind of special too!
