This was my first attempt at an open book cake. It was donated for a church fundraiser. I was not too pleased with the way it turned out but the people at the church liked it. After I get my nerves up...I think I will try again.

2-layer cheesecake flavored cake (torted each layer, and used 1 for the lid) iced in buttercream with fondant tissue, ribbon and bow. This was the first time I've tried a cake like this, and found lots of things I need to do differently next time.

I made this for a friends mom's birthday. I hated how it turned out, but they loved it. I had a bad cake week. Cakes did not bake right, and my MMF turned out bad too. Good learning experience. I will try again. Please give me any suggestions you may have to make this better. I would love the tips!

I was so excited to try one of these! The cake is short because it's a flourless chocolate (which, with great effort, I torted + filled w/raspberry puree...it was like cutting thru clay) topped w/whipped ganache. All decos' are fondant except the baking tools which were made using a chocolate mold+painted w/food colo. and luster dust. The lid is fondant w/gumtex (and a cardboard cake circle for stability). Thanks to everyone here for inspiration and help - couldn't have done it without you!

Cake is frosted with IMBC icing. Tuxedo and dress are made from fondant. Side of the cakes are airbrushed with old gold luster dust while some of the fondant decorations are airbrushed with super pearl dust. The cake was ordered for 2 babies dedication (boy & girl) + to celebrate boy's mom bday. This is my first time using IMBC as frosting & create conelly lace... although IMBC tasted good, I had some hard time to make it smooth (especially on the top). Not really happy with the connelly lace either.

(I apologize for the dark photo) This cake was made for a "Spring Book Swap Brunch." The cake ended up quite small, as I kept cutting and cutting to shape it... but it still adequately fed the bunch. Next time I will attempt to create the leather-book-cover look that some talented folks on this site have created.

Little boy wanted an Open Season cake with a waterfall. I wanted the waterfall to be a bit more realistic, but he was happy with it. I put a lot of piping gel on top of the waterfall to give it a wet look.

This is for my god daughter who's turning 15 and she loves to read. As I don't have a book pan, this cake is carved from a rectangular pan but I have problems smooting out the surface. Hope she'll like it anyway.

This was my only cake for the weekend – Bridal Shower cake with 14” square & 6” round. The customer provided the picture so I’m not sure who the original artist is but this is my recreation. I see now that I’m looking at the picture that I forgot the border around the lid (to cover side) but I was pleased. The customer was extremely happy and I was asked for several business cards by the Halll staff as I was leaving – I love new opportunities…lol

These were done for a bridal shower. I was so honored that this person drove all the way from Brooklyn to Long Island to pick these up (for you non-New Yorkers, that's a 45 minute drive without traffic, and there's always traffic here) Totally worth it, they were a hit!

This is a white cake covered in fondant. The writing is an edible image and I used luster dust on the edges of the pages. I cut this from two sheet cakes because I don't have the book pan. KHalstead's cake was my inspiration for trying this. I wanted to make a book cake like hers for Christmas but I needed a birthday cake so I decided to try it before Christmas. Thank you KHalstead for all your help and answering my questions. Also thanks to Price for instructing me on how to apply the image to fondant.

I know this is odd but my husband decided he wanted me to make a cake that looked like a peeled orange after I had done a banana the same way, I held on to that until now for his birthday. that was his cake. ;-)

i had an open house this year to show off our house while it was decorated for christmas .( i have eight full size christmas trees.)i made five different cakes not to mention oodles of fudge, peanut butter balls, cookies, bars, and candies. the one with the chocolate dipped fruit is a better than sex cake. the one with the peppermint sticks is a red velvet cake. all of the cakes had either buttercream or cream cheese frosting. believe it or not almost everything was gone by the end of the night.

This was my first try at an open book. I learned so much in doing this one (what not to do also)! I did this one last month for a black history month celebration. The bottom cake is 22"x 15" made to sort of resemble an antique table top or desk top. The book was carved from a 1/2 sheet.
