For my son's 2nd bday party coming up I have this elaborate two tier (8" & 6") cake planned w/all his fav. things.....planes, trains, and trucks!!! Was going to be great.......a lot of time & work...everything was going to be done in fondant (he LOVES this stuff....he calls it 'mash it") & edible images. It is going to be a very small party only like 10 people....but really wanted to do something special b/c this was also going to be my 1 yr mark for cake decorating....more for myself than anyone else...wanted to show what i've learned.

i already have the invites, plates, and napkins to match the cake.....was going to be GREAT!!!

Well I was at Michalels w/my son looking at some pans. and they have the shaped pans on racks on the lower levels of the shelves. He sees the fire truck pan and literally goes crazy!!! He grabs it and won't let go. He proceeds to tell & show EVERYONE we pass his new find!! "Fire twuk....take (cake) Mom-e" I couldn't believe how excited he was!! icon_rolleyes.gif Needless to say, I bought the fire truck pan and he carried the thing around w/him all night. Guess that will be his 2nd bday cake!!! It will still be cute and guess better yet b/c I KNOW he will LOVE it!!! thumbs_up.gif

Will have to save my elobarte plane/train/truck cake for another year!!! icon_sad.gif

Awww.....I know exactly how this feels. My girls do it to me all the time! Sometimes with more than cake! Our latest argument is that they both had their room redone less than a year ago...painted the colors they like etc. Well...after I went out and found every single disney princess thing I could ( and I mean even the TV and DVD player and stereo and the bed itself as well as bedding and rugs and wall decor and two pink walls and two purple ones ) and putting them in my soon to be 6 year olds room..she decided two days ago..that she isnt' INTO princesses anymore!

So a few thousand dollars into this...I told her that its fine if she doesnt like it anymore, but I will put it all away and her room can be white for now! LOL....no way I can afford to replace that much stuff every time they have a whim..good thing yours is 2!..hehe

kids.....
I always have the best ideas for birthdays and halloween, and they always have something different in mind. recently for my dd 5th birthday I had this great party planned where each kid was going to get to decorate their own cake and take it home. Well, she just wanted to have it at the park. Okay I thought Cinderella theme would be cute, well, she thought animal theme would be better- so that is what we did! (And it was fabulous) Sometimes I do wonder when did they get such strong opinions.
Now with my baby I had learned the only time I will get to pick is their first so make the first one good! LOL

My daughter is 3 and for hallowen, I bought a malificent costume (the witch from sleeping beauty) $80. at the disneystore, she already has a sleeping beauty costume. Oh no that is not what she wants. She wants to be a veggie tale character. So I go and buy all the fabric to be Larry the Cucumber. When I draw everything out to start sewing (which I'm not a sewer, but I fiqured it's only a cucumber how hard is that), she tells me she wants to be jonah (jonah's an ASPARAGUS, with some sort of toga looking outfit). I was about to call off halloween all together. Instead I decided I was going to make us both M&M costumes. Last night we went to a city block party and it was like pulling teeth to get her dressed. After all was said and done she had a good time. (and looked adorable). Next year I'm going out the day of halloween to buy her outfit so she can't change her mind...... icon_rolleyes.gif

This is just past my 1 year mark. I wanted to do a racecar on top of a sheetcake for my sons NASCAR party. I had it all planned out and ready to go in my head. Well, after I had already purchased everything I needed to make the cake.... the little booger told me he wanted me to just do cupcakes in black and white to look like a checkered flag. Man what a let down for me!!! I ended up making 96 cupcakes that night. I had to tell everyone what the 'cake' was. It was pretty sad. Everyone was like, "Oh yea, I see it!", "How cute." How sad was that! Especially when last years cake was a huge pirate ship that everyone thought was
AMAZING!!! Anyways, everyone loves homemade goods, that's all that really matters in the end - that and that your son is happy with HIS cake!

My personal opinion....and I have three kids that have survived to young adulthood.....is that we cater to them too much. Myself included. We need to graciously and lovingly tell them NO more often! They're spoiled.

SO SHOOT ME!!!!!

On the subject of kids changing their minds. My son is four and has been telling me all summer that he wants me to make him a clifford the big red dog cake. On a different note, every time we go to Safeway he wants to look at the cakes. So the other day out of the blue he tells me that he doesn't want a clifford cake any more he wants a Madagascar cake, so I said, okay well we'll have to come up with some ideas of how we will decorate a madagascar cake. He tells me, no Mom I want a cake from Safeway. Their cakes are reallllllllllllly cooooool.

My kids birthday cakes are a real headache for me. They want everything on the cake. staring from dinosaur and ending with scelletons . preferably thy would like also lego bionicle robots in the middle and lake of blood would be even better. (now the latest favorite they ordered for next year is the cake from this site hand and the eyeball) Usually i just tell them that the cake will be a surprise and they have always been happy with it. But this year somebody commented boys cake that you can make so pretty cakes but why do you never make normal birthday cakes for your own kids icon_surprised.gif I have to say i was shocked. But my kids will get the cakes what they want, not what pleases our guests eyes icon_biggrin.gif . (Ps. the cake wasn't even scary but it defenetly didn't go to the "normal" cake group)

I agree you get to decide on the cake for the first birthday only, that is why i made the teddy bear cake i wanted to for my DD first birthday, she liked it though and it was just right as she always played with teddies then. The decor was all her teddies all over the place so she was comfortable even with guest she has seen the first time. The table was set with teddys holding serving dishes (earthen pots), teddys holding the forks and spoons, big basket housing the plates and bowls. The older kids too had a blast playing with teddies, the prizes for games were huge size teddies, and the goodies included teddies holding a basket full of chocolates n sweets. How i enjoyed planning this party A-Z.
I dont see the same happening this year. My DD daughter is into so many things that we have still not decided on any one theme, today its Barney, tomorrow its Teletubbies, and then sometimes she wants Thomas, and yet at times Butterflies. I dont see myself making any more cakes that i want. The same applies to my 6 year old son..... I can't even suggest.... but i would like take up the challenge whatever they want... after all its their birthday and they would be happy with what they want.... i guess guest should give in, even if they dont like the theme.

Ditto Phoov. I have taken the long rode to figure that out too. They get over it quick, and if not, you have quite for a few days.
I also learned the hard way, NO theme rooms! We just had my 15 y/o daughters room painted a year ago, within 8 months she wanted a different color. She picked the first one!
God luv em' I know I do. I probably give in more now, knowing their about to start driving, then boyfriends, then off to school, oh am I going to be a bad empty nest mom, I want to cry thinking about it. icon_cry.gif

Stylish! My nest has been empty for 11 weeks now, and I'm so busy I have to remind myself that something has changed. I talk to my youngest at college more now than I did when he was still at home! With email and cell phones, we're REALLY connected! LOL Enjoy the home years - They fly!

I know he's only two and doesn't even really understand birthday cake yet. And he's probably already forgotten he picked out a pan w/a firetruck b/c I keep my pans put up in a seperate room. But the party is going to be so small (3 small kids and their parents)....that doing something simple may be the better way to go.

But who knows......His bday isn't for another 3 1/2 weeks....I could still change my mind!! I know he'd like the other cake I had planned....guess I'll just have to wait and see what I feel like doing that week.
