Has anyone ever used 2 different borders on the same cake? (ie, rope & shell).

i love the reverse shells on the top border and use the regular shells on the bottom. Reverse shells are a little difficult on the bottom border!! I do this often on my cakes. i think i have some pics of it in my pics if you want to look! good luck choosing a design!

Its a 1 layer 1/2 sheet cake with a 1 layer 8 in round centered on top. On the 8 in round is a US Army edible image and I rope bordered the 8 in round top and bottom. Now I am deciding whether I should rope boarder the sheet cake portion too or use a shell boarder. Any suggestions.

rope would be masculine. and fit the military theme. I would do a couple of shells. If it doesn't look good. wipe it away. and do the rope.
check out this cake could be nice for your top border???http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=search&type=full&cat=0&pos=14

I can't remember where I saw this...probably here...but they had a cake similar to yours as far as the sheet cake with a smaller round cake on top. They did a reverse shell border on all of the edges of both cakes....then at the center of the swirl part of the reverse shells they added a little dot of frosting in a contrasting color that matched their color theme on the cake. Did that make sense??!! lol It's late! Anyway - it looked so great...really finished off those reverse shells nicely & dressed it up a bit. You could do the reverse shells on the bottom cake in the yellow-gold color & then a tiny dot of black on the swirl part of it. You could even then go back and add some black accents to the rope border on the top cake so the two borders coordinate well with each other even though they're different styles.

One last question before I head off to sleep. Is the spelling correct on Congrats.? I believe that it is, but my mind right now is playing tricks on me since I am sleepy.

Wow, the cake is perfect and so is the spelling. It looks really dramatic with the two borders and the contrasting colours. I love it!

It turned out sooo beautifuly!! Great work! I really like how the combination of border styles compliments each other very well...and the splash of blue is perfect! Sorry I mentioned all that stuff about the gold & black in my earlier comment! icon_redface.gif I just always think of gold & black for the Army, I guess...lol. It's really pretty! icon_smile.gif
