I bunch mine up together in the shape I want them, and just spread the icing across them.. sometimes they'll slide a little, but they mostly stay together just fine.. if they slide some, just kind of push it back into place and spread your frosting across.. you have to put it thick enough to cover the indentations between the cupcakes .. hope this makes sense! lol

If you put a dab of icing on the bottom on the cupcake it acts like a glue to the board.

The only tip I have to add is that if you arrange the cupcakes while they're still a little warm, you can push them together into the shape you want and they'll hold it as they finish cooling. It makes the gaps a little smaller. Using the foil liners helps too.

i read somewhere that you can also use the big icer tip and ice the cupcakes from right to left (or left to right) and that would help fill in the gaps inbetween the cupcakes. then use your spatula to smooth over evenly and decorate.

Would the upside down method work?
