I made Calla Lillies on a wire, but I was going to cut the wire off before I put them on the cake. Should I leave the wire to make them more stable?
If I leave the wire do I need to use the flower spikes to put them in the cake?
It depends on how you want to arrange them. You could cut off the wire and lay them on the cake. If you want to use the wire to support the flower in an arrangement, you would need a flower spike. Sticking the wire into the cake is not a good idea. (although I have seen people do it)
I would leave the wire on, just because i wouldn't want someone eating a flower and not realizing that the wire was there. As far as putting them in the cake, wrap the exposed wire with florest tape, then insert the end of the wire into a small drinking straw and insert that into the cake. Straws are much cheaper then the spikes.

Funny, I knew someone that was afraid of just that, and what she did was use a licorice stick and did flowers on the tip of that and then placed them in the cake......
Yes with a flower as large as a calla lily, you could get away with using stick candy too. I have to admit, I tend to make my flowers on toothpicks or wooden skewers or things like that. Just in case someone does put it in their mouth. Haha, but with gumpaste, if they did, they are likely to break a tooth with a calla lily.
