I'm somewhat new to cake decorating and I have my first wedding cake to make in January. I was wondering about the cake topper, the bride bought a base for the topper to sit on and gave that to me....does the base (which is plastic) just sit on the top layer of the cake - it won't sink into the top of the cake?

It really depends on how heavy the cake topper is .. I had one that was very, very heavy... I had to place a dowel to prevent it from sinking into the top layer.. it was Lenox glass and was really heavy .. You just place the base on the cake and the topper on top of that .. if the topper is really heavy, I'd make a small cardboard circle, cover it nicely with a white grease resistant (if using buttercream icing) paper and dowel under it for support .. icon_smile.gif
