Food Network Spooky Cake Challenge
Decorating By adven68 Updated 25 Oct 2005 , 4:40pm by Cakemaster26
Hi guys....it's a commercial...I didn't know it would be on...usually I hear about these shows here....but tune in...it's pretty cool!! Goota go....
Arrrrrgh! My fave didn't win. He was the baker that didn't use a blowtorch. Blowtorch guy's cake was boring.
Loved the candy mosaic and the cauldron. Thought it needed something other than the big pumpkin. Maybe a giant eyeball?
Interesting to watch. Worth missing part of WS game. I do not normally like super-decorated cakes cause who the heck wants to eat gumpaste? However, these cakes had lots of yummy candy decorations.
night all
Why can't they spend less time repeating the same thing over and over and more time on the DETAILS. I want details!!! At least a few good close ups going over the cakes. I just want to pull my chair up to within 1 inch of the TV but I don't think it would help.
I am such a novice and just get blown away with what is possible.(well for someone else that is)
Good night to all!
I loved this one! The theme is sooooo endless and I think the cakes really showed it.
I felt for Bronwen--always the bridesmaid and never the bride!
I really think that Norman--the pumpkin train & station with candy pouring out--was robbed. I didn't hear an analysis, but I'm guessing he lost because he didn't make enough candy???
The winner's was good, but if I saw all of them in a shop and could only buy one, I'd have had to toss a coin to decide between the pumpkin/cauldron/hat and the candy train/station.
I enjoy the FN Challenges and I'd like to see them follow up each challenge with a one hour show of the winner doing a step-by-step re-construction of the cake--I'd pay to by a video of that!
Happy decorating!
Rae
I kinda wish Bronwen won...I think she was the only one who didn't do a haunted house theme!
My pick would have been the train station and pumpkin train. The others were really good too, but I thought that one was the best. Such a fun show to watch, but I too wish there were more details!!
I couldn't decide which one I thought was the best 'cause they were all so great! I did like the one that won, though...the house was especially realistic, I thought. Really looked like an old, abandoned, haunted house! I just think all of them are so talented....I would be a horrible judge!! lol The patience they have is unbelievable to me....& I thought having 3 kids gave me a lot of patience...lol...nothing compared to what these people have. And their composure!! Even when they broke something they still were in good spirits...I'd be in tears.
I agree i think that the train should have at least placed it was my favorite with Bronwens was great also that was my second choice......
Blakescakes if it makes you feel better she won last week on the cupcake challenge that one was awesome!!
I liked Bronwen's and The pumpkin train/house cake. I agreed with the judges on Carol's cake--I loved the tree trunk and the faces but I didn't get the houses, either.
Hello,
If you check on Food Network's website it will list all the dates it is on again. I know it's on at 6:00 this Saturday night (will be taping it!). I love these shows! I have a lot of them on tape.
Heather
I think it's also Thursday at 9pm and Friday at 1 am?
I TiVo'ed the 1 am recording since that won't interfere with anything else.
Can't wait to see it!
It's not fair! I can't watch them! My boyfriend says that the Food Network is the Lifetime channel for food. He won't let me near the remote. I never get to watch Food Network unless its during the day on my lunch break while he's still at work!
Id like to learn more about the contestants!!!
What are rest of there names? Id like to find out more info on there bakery shop and stuff written about them.
Why? I want to make them my virtual mentor. Meaning they can be my mentors even just only in my own mind. Maybe I meet them or other like to some day. Got to start my research for a mentor somewhere.
Of course Ill try to catch the show again. But if someone has them info it would be nice.
Thanks
Bronwen Weber caldron - Texas Culinary Academy instructor
Norman (last name?) Train station - (name of business? )
Blow torch guy (name?) Tim Burton like scene - (name of business? )
I don't get the food network. Anyone know of any pics of these cakes on the web somewhere?
The show was fabulous - but I would like more details too ! The cauldron cake was my favorite - the candy mozaics were awesome! I can actually get my hubby to watch these with me! He appreciates the talent and especially liked all the tools used like the blowtorch!

klamshops,
All those decorators are quite famous in their own rights. I had the privledge of meeting Norman Davis this past summer at a Food Network Challange I attented. He is amazing.
He's based in VA and has a cake shop called The Sweet Life. Here's the link. http://www.thesweetlife.com/frames.htm
Duff Goldman is that wild and crazy guy. He has Charm City cakes.

Bronwen Weber teachs classes at the TX Culinary Art Institute and seems to always be popping up here and there on tv. She doesn't have her own cake shop that I'm aware of. ( anyone correct me if I'm wrong)
I'm like you and love learning from all these decorators, even if it's just on tv. Hope this helps!
KimAZ
Thank you kim! There were pics from the cake challenge on Norman Davis's website of his cake. None of Duff's though.
I googled Bronwen Weber and she has a website, but it appears to be down right now or its just gone.
Mel
I just loved this show too!! And I was thinking the same thing about it! I wish they would slow down the cameras and let us take a better look at these cakes!! They were all wonderful. Some I liked better then others but I think they all did great. I liked this one better then the cupcake one I think.
KimAZ I think you are right about Bronwen. I'm pretty sure that I heard on the show last night that she doesn't have a shop anywhere. She said she gets her satisfaction from seeing how many bakers she can "turn out" lol.
I didn't get to tape it but I think I will set it up to tape for tonight!!
Boy, I'm glad I'm not the only one that wishes for more cake detail and less repitition. Too bad they can't do an "in depth" how to version of the show for decorators!!
I did like Bronwen's cake--it was a different idea and I thought it had the best use of candy.
Next week I think is a challenge using chocolate. Don't know if I'll be able to watch that one--chocolate is just too hard for me to resist!!!
What a fun show! I thought is was going to be a room full of cakes. I also thought I could learn or take something from them. Yeah right. Don't get me wrong I love watching, but it's way out of my league. If you can hand carve faces and such, like they did, that's God given. that's something I don't think all the practice in the world would help me with.
My DH also watched with me. Thought the tool man was great
I can't wait for Sugar Rush to start.
i loved the winners cake!! especially that she had made soooo much candy for hers...and that it was kind of a life affirming contest for her. im glad she won!! i did like the blow torch guy too though. especially when things were going wrong and he told the camera man to GO AWAY, SERIOUSLY GO AWAY!! im so glad that im not the only one to say that while im doing a cake...running kids and distracting hubby have all heard this many times...haha
I'm pretty sure they don't show lingering close-ups of the cakes b/c people would make exact duplicates of their work the next day. We have all seen people claim other peoples recipes/designs as their own work.
Thanks for the heads up. hopefully my cable will be up. if not I won't be able to. Anyways I rather have everyone get their power on first.
Kristy
