Need Some Ideas For A Simple Wedding Cake
Decorating By meredetrois Updated 8 Feb 2007 , 7:24pm by meredetrois
Hi, I'm new here. I was referred by a friend. I just started cake decorating and I'm on my 2nd cake class. I found out today that my cousin is getting married soon. They don't have a lot of money to spend on cakes, decorations, etc., so my sister and I have agreed to help. I offered to make a simple (very simple) wedding cake. No more than two tiers. I was thinking about something using wide ribbon. Does anyone have any ideas they would be willing to share?
There are some beautiful cake on CC in the gallery. Some are elegant yet simple but can/would totally wow a crowd. Be forworned though the gallery is like a black hole---once you start looking at all those gorgeous cakes it's hard to stop--Hours seem like minutes in there.
"Plain" icing with ribbon at the bottom of the tiers seems to be the big trend these days. The second most popular request I get would be adding the scrolls on the sides. I have a few ribbon-cakes in my photos if you want to have a look. Good luck with your first one and just have fun with it! Don't stress! You'll do great!
I think Swiss dots on a cake are elegant. Just put the phrase swiss dots into the search section of the galleries, and you will bring up plenty of examples.

Thanks so much for all the ideas. I love the look of the ribbons and the scrolls are beautiful! I hadn't thought about swiss dots! Another great idea!
Tips 221 (small dots) and 2020 (large dots) will both pipe three round dots in a triangular fashion for you. That way you don't have to pipe every dot individually. I listed the store I purchased mine from for you below. They are very nice and will mail them to you. The tips aren't very expensive at all, but boy do they save some time (and hand muscles)!

If you look in my cakes under "Stacia's wedding cake" (the one with the gumpaste rose cascade--it's titled something like that) you'll see a cake I did using tip 221, the small three dot tip.
Good luck with your cake!
yes the people at Cake and Candy connection are very nice people!!!
They sell dragees too this looks easy and simple but don't know if you can afford the dragees,

I like the one with the dragees except I saw it with a glass engraved topper with the bride and groom's names
hope this helps
sorry I didn't mean to attach that last picture is not quite what you are looking for only look at the links!!!
This is a picture I pulled from somewhere a while back before I started taking note of who made the cakes--not sure where, so if it's your cake...my apologies for not being able to give you the credit.
That is from Jacques Pastries, it might be better to post a link to his site.

If you are really good at icing a cake smooth, a plain cake with no top borders and just ribbon on the bottom of each tier with a few fresh flowers on the top tier would be very pretty. Something like this?

or- on the other hand if smooth icing is not your cup of tea...
i saw an episode of throwdown with bobby flay on the foodnetwork one time. he had a competition with a professional wedding cake decorator (he learned in several hours or something like that)...but what he came up with was shockingly beautiful! he stacked the cake and then pressed shredded coconut to the sides, added lots of fresh roses and viola! the decorator won the challenge for professionalism, but the judges said that his cake was the one that they all wanted to dive in to!
you could add a ribbon to that as well. here are the two recipes. unfortunately the one he did is not pictured.
