Is there a special paper to use when covering a cake board? Can I just use aluminum foil? I have used parchment paper and the moisture from the cake makes it all wrinklely. When I just use the board it gets a ring around the cake. I have painted a board with royal icing and it did pretty good, but I am wondering what everyone else does with their cake boards.

Also, I am fixing to start using plywood to set the cakes on and I don't want to set the cakes directly on the wood.

Thanks.

Well there are several options for the cake boards:
1. The actually make grease-proof cake boards that can be used as it.
2. You can cover it with heavy duty aluminum foil (the regular stuff rips easily.
3. They sell fanci-foil just for this purpose.
4. You can cover your plywood contact paper (clear or otherwise)
5. You can cover your boards with wrapping paper and then clear contact paper.
6. You can cover the boards with fondant.

Maybe someone knows other ways too. There is so much you can do with cake boards!

WOW! There were a lot of typos in that last e-mail. I'm embarassed! icon_redface.gifthumbsdown.gif I hope you can read it anyway!

I just guess I got so excited about all the possibilities that my brain was going faster than my fingers could type. icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks. I read it just fine. Now, where can I find this Fanci-foil stuff. I have been looking around locally and Wal-mart and Hobby-lobby don't seem to have it. Hobby-lobby may, but I am wondering about the colors it comes in?

As for fondant...I am just a big chicken. I haven't had the nerve to try it out yet. But I bet the possibilities are endless.

Fancy Foil is made by wilton and comes in silver ,Gold and white however I have only really ever seen the silver sold!! It runs about $4.99 roll and is grease proof.I use floral foil or wedding foil.It comes on a larger roll and comes in many colors. The wedding foil is also used in wrapping up small pieces of fruitcake years ago when that was popular but they still make the colored foils! Floral foil is waterproof and used in wrapping around pots etc to make the pot appear fancier. Each come in many colors!!

I buy my Fanci-foil at Michael's or Jo-Ann's. I usually don't shop at Hobby Lobby, but I would imagine that they would have it. Wilton makes it and it comes in gold and silver.

I have also seen it (not the Wilton brand) at my local bakery supply store. It comes in all sorts of metallic colors.

Maybe sometime you can experiment with making a small batch of Marshmallow fondant. It is really easy and if you somehow mess it up, you haven't lost much money - it's cheap to make. I love it. I don't make it often, but if the need arises, at least I know it is there as an option.

"Contac" paper is kinda like "Coke" it is a generic name for a plastic paper with adhesive backing, for covering shelves, etc. There are lots of other brands, but Contac was the original from years ago.
They make it in all kinds of designs, plain colors and clear. The clear is very good to cover gift wrap or wallpaper, etc., to make it where the boards can be washed. Hope that helps a little.
Oh, it is available just about anywhere, Walmart, dollar stores, drug stores, etc. Janice

a fondant covered board would be the easiest way to larn to "play" with fondant...since all you'll be doing is rolling out a flat piece and moving it over to another flat surface..just make sure that you put a little gel on our board to stick the fondant too.

I love contact paper because you can wipe it clean with a damp cloth when you drop a little icing where it isn't supposed to go.

I like to cover my boards with gift paper wrap that matches the theme of my cake or compliments it in some way. Then I cover it with clear self adhesive plastic that's food safe. I find it makes for a more professional look. If I am just doing a pratice cake that no one is going to see then I might be tempted to use foil. But that's rare.

Ummm, "Coke" and "Contac" are brand names not the generic name of the product.

Yes, Princess..."Coke" and "Contac" are brand names, but also are used for most soft drinks and any paper or plastic with self adhesive , whatever brands those may be. Maybe "generic" is the wrong term, maybe "universal" would suit better?

A cake decorator told me that some people just use wrapping paper without the contact paper etc. (she did NOT advise this!!) Just to let you know this is NOT a good idea as the ink from the wrapping paper can spread to the cake and can be toxic. I don't know if you knew this already but just in case you didn't...... icon_biggrin.gif

I've has this discussion recently with someone that was from up North. Every time I say coke he things I mean a Coke. To me they are all a coke until you get specific.

The use of coke may be more of a Southern thing. It's just a variation of soft drink or soda pop. icon_biggrin.gif

When I use a wooden board...I usually cover with freezer paper first and then whatever paper I decide to use. This helps keep the wood from tearing your paper.

You can also use the thin Vinyl table cloths to cover your boards, You can find them in a lot of different colors & themes at the Dollar Tree.& they last for a LONG time. You can also find the Contac paper at most Dollar stores for $1.00-$2.00 usually. I also use Heavy duty Foil and Freezer Paper.

*Coke * is a Southern Term Mostly~ =0) But not only do I ask for a COKE its what I want. =-)

*Soda or POP * mostly a northern Term, People here in the south always know when someones not from around here when they ask for a Soda or a Pop..haha.. Its cute though. =0)

Hope This helps!

~Sweet~ =0)
