For the life of me I can not work on a cake constantly until it is finished.

I find myself taking a break every 20 to 30 minutes and have to have the tv on.

Just wondering if I am the only one?

I usually have to take breaks to pick my kids up from school or to deal with them if they are crying. I sometimes take too many orders and feel that I can not stop or I will be up all night. It seems when I only 1 or 2 cakes to do that I will take a break and watch tv. icon_smile.gif

Hi traci,

I think that I am crazy because I still have to take the breaks even if I have several to do.

I almost always have the TV going and will sometimes move my work surface so I can watch while I work icon_smile.gif I'm mostly listening, but will stop and watch when I do that. Of course, I can't really do a whole lot of cake stuff till my kids are all in bed (or at least the little ones, my oldest will generally stay out of the way and is even a help from time to time now. Esp with baking cookies).

Nope, you're not the only one!! I have the TV on and a small child!! It takes me at least two days to finish one cake. That is just decorating...not including baking and making icing and fillings.

The same here.

I start at least two to three days ahead of time and have everything ready and still have to have the breaks and end up having to stay up just about all night to finish.

Guess I'm really weird or something.

I didnt decor cakes a lot. But which I have decorated I didnt take break in between.
But taking break is good so you can start again with fresh mind. And you can get the nice result more than you want.
From now I will go for that.icon_smile.gif

Thanks
Nitu

Stephanie....I will take a break if there is a show that I really want to watch!!!! I have been trying to bake and make icing ahead of time so it does not take me so long to finish. Today...I actually made all of the icing and colored it for the 6 cakes I have for this weekend. I even got my decorating bags ready! icon_smile.gif

I am the complete opposit. As soon as I start with a cake, I do not take a break until it is done. Well... at least I try not to take a break. The time between pulling the cake out of the oven and until it is cooled down to decorate it, is horrible for me... But I am like that with everything (cooking, cleaning, scrap booking, crafting, whatever project I am working on). For example... I finished my cardboard Gingerbread-Houses Patterns today (assembled them also to see how they will look like). I have bees in my butt and want to go to Walmart RIGHT NOW to buy the ingredients for the Gingerbread dough, to start baking TONIGHT.... Not a good Idea. Today is our 2nd Anniversary and my hubby planned a nice and cozy DVD night. I guess I am going to watch movies... while googeling eye with my cardboard houses LOOOOL icon_biggrin.gif

My hubby tells me all the time to relax a little LOL

traci,

I have a small tv in the kitchen so I don't really watch the show but I listen.

My problem is that I stop entirely just to stop...can't work on it constantly.

I had another order for the Winnie the Pooh stacked on a sheet cake that she picked up today.

On Thursday I did all the royal icing flowers.
Friday I cut out my boards and covered them.
Saturday I made my icing and colored it.
Sunday morning I baked the cakes...2 layer sheet and the 3D Winnie.
Sunday afternoon I iced the 2 layer sheet (Winnie broke in the pan so I had to do him over).
Monday morning rebaked Winnie and iced him that afternoon (have done so many Winnies that I can crumb coat, outline and decorate him in about an hour...got smart and started using the tip 21 to make the stars.

Started decorating the cake at about 7:30 p.m. and didn't finished until about 2:00 a.m.

Should have only taken me about 2 hours to do this cake but I just had to take all those breaks...dumb me.

Can't post the picture until I get my computer fixed.

I have a Care Bear due for Friday and have everything done but the cake which I will do tomorrow and it will take me all night again just to do this simple cake which normally would take about 2 to 3 hours to do.

I seriously need help icon_cry.gif

I try to take breaks but even if I start icing etc after I get home from work (I work 3p-11p) I find myself trying to finish... Either I or my hubby makes me stop and finish the next day.. I dont what it is but a half finished cake bugs me.... icon_rolleyes.gif

I too also watch tv while doing cakes. Sometimes when I am tired I will put a cake in the oven and take a quick nap.

WOW...I must be wierd. I can't stop til I'm finished. It drives me crazy! LOL I don't do tv.....might have a cd on..... I work from start to finish.........the only difference being if I've frozen the cake instead of baking and decorating on the same day. My break is waiting for the cake to cool.

I 'm "obbsessive-compulsive" enough to not WANT to stop once I've started. But, I've learned recently (the hard way) that I NEED to take breaks every so often! Otherwise, I get tired, and antsy about getting it done and making it look good, and I start to make stupid mistakes and end up making the cake look horrible. I sometimes have to re-do things that I shouldn't!
It's probably my ADHD kicking in! icon_cool.gif

I've discovered that I should do everything but the WORDS.....I can do a satisrying job on everything else, and then much up the writing. The writing isn't especially hard for me, but I think I should wait!

I've "told myself" that I MUST not do the handwriting on the cake til I"ve rested. I seem to do a rush job there, and no matter how great I think the rest of the cake looks.....I'm disappointed in the writing part. The writing part isn't hard for me.....but being tired and wanting to be finished causes me to do a sloppy job and RUIN THE WHOLE CAKE!!!!! It's a mind game!

Stephanie...I think what has happened to me is that I have stayed up late too many nights and know if I do not keep working...I won't be going to bed until like 3 or 4 in the morning!!!

Your pooh cake sounds adorable!!! icon_smile.gif

I normally break during the baking and cooling. I make icing during this time. Then its a waiting game until the cake is cooled. I do often take breaks during the decorating part. Mostly because I get frustrated if I dont get a good flow. Watching tv is what I normaly do. MC

At times like this, I could use some OCD...not making fun at the ones with OCD because my youngest son has this.

Glad to know that I am not completely crazy!
