I have been asked to do a birthday cake for my MIL. I love doing cakes so I am really excited about it. Her bday party is also our families annual fall get together so I am thinking of using fresh flowers in fall colours. She loves chocolate and raspberries so I thought maybe I would do a chocolate cake with a white chocolate raspberry mousse filling and then a white chocolate icing...does this sound alright??? Also as far as the "Happy Birthday" on the cake I was thinking of making a stencil and using the gold luster dust instead of doing the letters in icing. Will that work or would it be a waste of time to even try?? I have never used luster dust (I think that is what it is called)

Thank you all for any suggestions!

Gina

I imagine you could use luster dust on buttercream. You could put some in a spray bottle with vodka and use it like an airbrush and spray in on over your stencil. You would just have to make the stencil big enough to cover most of the cake so you don't get overspray. I would test this out first to see if it worked okay.
It sound delicious though! Be sure to post a pic!

I did use luster dust on buttercream. JUST BE GENTLE. I used Gold on a lite choco cake. It worked fine.

I just used it straight from the jar. Was I supose to mix it? It worked! thank goodness. But I was not doing lettering. For that maybe some mixing might be a good idea. anything like extracts should work. Most of them have a ton of alcohol

Instead of using luster dust, try the cake sparkles. You can use the fall colors with red, orange and yellow mixed. I used these colors together when I made the "turkey" that Wilton had last year and the colors were so pretty together. This way you don't stress over the luster dust as much. And to get less of the flake look with the sparkles, just empty the sparkles on a paper towel or wax paper and crush with a spoon or a Pampered Chef muffin press and crush them into smaller pieces. They actually last longer too! sorry if i confused you. I hope this helps.
