I would do it the other way around - pumpkin cake with spice icing.

I'm sure you can find a pumpkin cake on this site, or check foodnetwork.com or epicurious.com, or even bhg.com (better homes & gardens.) Since it's seasonal, there are tons of ladies mags that have pumpkin-related recipes. Taste of Home has a fall recipe magazine out that is nothing but recipes, and lots of them are pumpkin.

For spice buttercream, either use cinnamon oil and clove oil or add cinnamon (I'd add ginger, too) to your icing a little at a time until you get the flavor you want. The ground spices will give you speckled icing.

Cindy - I used the pumpkin buttercream on pumpkin flavored cutout cookies and it was really good!I would think it would taste really good on a spice cake. Its definitely worth trying. If you have any questions feel free to ask

Thanks for posting the recipe Denise

Denise,

Thanks so much for the post. I didn't see it in time for the cake I was making, but will use it soon. It sounds great. I ended up doing something completely different. I make a banana cake with cinnamon buttercream. It turned out really good.

testing things out for the upcoming holiday i made a layer cake with apple spice cake on the bottom, then a layer of vanilla buttercream, then another thin layer of apple spice cake, then a layer of pumpkin buttercream. amazing. i'm thinking of making them as individual cakes as it's not terribly stable as a large cake. so good tho
