Ok ya'll...I just set up an appointment to meet with an admission advisor to possibly start the pastry course! What do you all think? It only takes a year, and being a stay at hom mom I really need to get out of the house and get my mind going. I am used to working full time, but since I got pregnant with my twins (who are now 10 months) I have been at home. I love it...but you know ladies, it can make your brain turn to mush after a while. I love to make cakes, and would love to learn do do a lot more...other than just what I have already done. Anyway, what do you all think? Thanks for the help! icon_redface.gif

I say BRAVO to you!! I have been a SAHM for 3 1/2 years now, and I can totally relate to what you are saying. New moms need more in their minds than Elmo, Blues Clues, and what the newest line at Gymboree might be. (Please don't think I shop at Gymboree, I could never afford to clothe my kids there!! LOL)

When I tried to express that same feeling to my family, I was made to feel guilty, like I didn't want anything to do with my kids or something. It was horrible and my spirit was really squashed for a while. I say if you have the support, it is the best thing you can do for your self and as a result, for your family. They will all prosper from the positive attitude you will have about yourself!!

Congratulations.

I say to you that you may think at times it may be hard, depending on the instructors..and students but there is nothing you cant do if you put your mind to it.

When I started almost 2 years ago, I was like..this is never going to end, and I've almost quit a few times thinking I was wasting my time, but now that I'm almost there I'm chomping at the bit to get it done!

My one and only regret was not getting a college degree and I thought that going to Baking and Pastry was going to be a piece of cake..hahaha

I'm working for every grade that I get! Struggling even to maintain a 3.5.

But so worth it. Hon, you hang in there, the prospects are good and if you can offer your customers versatility, you can command more in the way of respect and fees.

and this if for Moms....DO not give such power to other people no matter who they are.No one can hurt you if you don't let them. Happy children come from happy mommies. You didn't say anything off the wall , it was just misinterpreted because you stirred the status quo and you made other people uncomfortable....but too bad for them, you are what counts!

No body but you and your nearest and dearest know what goes on in your house...when they walk 10 miles in your shoes..( there go the shoes again..lol) then they can judge..and even then...

I tell them to go jump into a cold lake!

I didn't realize that there weren't culinary schools near everyone. LOL...tells you how much I know. The school I am going to is like 10 minutes from my house. I have been juggling what I wanted to go to school for...I am already a Certified Medical Assistant, and was either going to go back to finish Nursing School, or go to school for Criminal Justice...either in forensic science or pyschology for criminal profiling. I realized the other two would take too much time away from my kids...and they are number one in my life! I can go to school at night and be with them all day...and even have a few hours with the hubby. The course is only a year long so I am not too worried. I always of course get nervous that I won't be able to do it...but I think when you have a passion for something it helps you through it! I definately have a passion for making cakes. It's more than a cake it's an art. My husband knows I wanted to go to school...and he didn't care for what, I am glad that he is being so supportive. I think if I was a SAHM of three (two of which are twin babies) I'd go crazy if my husband wasn't there for me 100%. I agree....if you want to do something...do it, you only live once!

And another SAHM of 6 yr old twins, and a 16, 9, and 8. I have been home for 10 yrs and I can honestly relate to having a brain of mush at this point. I have a college degree I have never used, oh wait a minute, I use it ever day! lol. You are blessed to be able to stay at home and blessed again to be able to go back to school. Good Luck!! I know you will love it, (I would). And yes, I'm jealous!!! lol

Congratulations! You go for it and enjoy it! I know I would love to be able to go - but work gets in the way. I've not been lucky enough to be able to stay home but can honestly say I understand about the mush. There are some weekends that I didn't think would ever end. As much as we love them - we need adult time too!

I say go for it and enjoy learning some new things and then come share them with those of us who wish we could do the same!! I am a SAHM for 3 years as well and some days I feel like my brain is totally mush. I think doing challenging cakes helps to keep me sane. Good luck!!

what i meant to say, is that all of us stay at home moms who live to far from a school like that are going to live vicariously through you....so share with us your experience and some of the cool stuff you'll be introduced too......we'll be waiting!!!!! hahahaa
i think that if there were a pastry school of some sort in my area i would go. i really enjoyed the wilton classes. i checked at the vo-tech school and they just offered a course in general food prep, so i could get a job preparing for a buffet or something.
you are very lucky to live so close to your school! i wish you well!!!!!!

...wonderful to read MaxieCakes! I attended culinary school which touched on all aspects of cooking and that's how I discovered my LOVE for baking and cake decorating. Not only will you add knowledge and skills to your existing talents, you'll probably find having attended culinary school as an excellent resource to getting some doors open for you that may not have been opened before. Adding the title of "Pastry Chef," "Baker," or "Culinarian" makes a huge difference in some places. Again Congratulations!!! icon_smile.gif

I AM SO PISSED AND FRUSTRATED AND GRRRRR. SO I WENT TO MEET WITH THE ADMISSIONS GUY TODAY, PAID THE REGISTRATION FEE, AND SET UP MY APPT TO GET THE FINANCIAL AID DONE....I WAS ENROLLED IN THE NIGHT COURSES (WHICH IS NEW TO THEIR PROGRAM...GOOD FOR US SAHM, AND WORKING PEOPLE) WELL I GET HOME AND TELL MY HUSBAND WHEN I WAS GOING TO START AND HE LAUGHED! HE LAUGHED! I WAS LIVID. I WANT TO DO THIS SO BAD, BUT HE IS TREATING ME LIKE THIS IS A PHASE I AM GOING THROUGH. WTF!!! (EXCUSE MY LANGUAGE AND CAPS....BUT I AM PISSED!) HE DIDN'T THINK I WOULD ACTUALLY DO IT! WHAT THE HELL DID HE THINK I WAS GOING TO MEET THE "ADMISSIONS" GUY FOR. DUH!!!! WELL HERE IS THE PROBLEM. IT'S A LITTLE OVER $31,000! HE FREAKED!!!! I GUESS I'LL BE A SAHM FOREVER!!!! HE SAID THERE IS NO WAY...EVEN WITH FINANCIAL AID WILL WE BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT, AND HE DOUBTS THAT WE'LL QUALIFY FOR THAT MUCH ANYWAY. I AM SO DEPRESSED! THE SCHOOL WAS AMAZING! I WAS SO EXCITED TO START. I KNOW IT IS A LOT...BUT YOU GET AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE WITH IT ON TOP OF YOUR PATESSERIE CERTIFICATE....IT'S A LE COURDON BLEU SCHOOL! YOU DON'T GET BETTER THAN THAT! I NEED MY SUPPORT FROM MY FELLOW CC FRIENDS. THANKS YA'LL!!! icon_sad.gif(

Ive never really posted before, but lurk a lot and felt the need to chime in on this.

You deserve, more than anything to follow your dreams, especially if they have been made available to you through admission to a top school and through the addition of night courses. Education is expensive, but if its going to make you happy, then why not do it? You only live once and you shouldnt forgo your dreams because of the financial aspects. I know thats not easy, but you should at least TRY financial aid and see what you can get from it. I say you do whats best for you (since you obviously put everyone else first by being a SAHM) and give it a shot! Maybe you could even get some local bakeries or shops to sponsor you. There is always a way!

BEST OF LUCK! I hope you make it through!!

It might be worthwhile to check into a small local bakery and see if they are interested in an apprentice and maybe instead of school, you could work a couple nights a week and learn on the job? That way you wouldn't be going into debt and I am sure would be learning as you go.

Then maybe sock away all the money and in a year or two have half of it or something.

I've been going to school my whole life, one class at a time. Just don't give up, just work towards your goals. You'll get there!

I am sure it was very frustrating to be laughed at. My husband also seems surprised sometimes that I am still making plans to open my cake business. It is like he thinks it is just a phase or something. About the school, I know it would be great to go but in my experience anything that you have to go in debt for soon becomes a burden. Even if you think it is worth it it soon becomes this huge weight on your shoulders. "the borrower is a slave to the lender" (don't know the book and verse but its in there somewhere). Also I don't think it is that important in this business to have a degree as in some others. Make some good designs that taste great and you will have customers. Good luck whatever you decide.
