Hi Daniela,
Have been busy resolving a property issue that has gone on for about a year. We won, but it was very exhausting and stressful. Still trying to recoup lost sleep, haha!

Hey Mama I forgot to ask. Which fondant did you use?

For the ribbon, I used the local bakery's fondant. I still find that the Wilton one works best for items like this, it has a more elastic quality to it and since I am not using it for covering a cake, it doesn't really matter what it tastes like. I think it works well because it has a hardener in it but I did add gum-tex powder to this fondant, and still it didn't work well.
Sometimes I do add gum-tex to the Wilton one, but even without it I can roll things paper thin and still have them hold up.

I used Virgin ise with my cake. I am thinking that it's a softer consistancy than Wilton but taste much better. LOL... Ummm I found that shortening broke it down faster so I had to keep the dust puff handy.

Well, when daughter number 2 took her baking course, they used shortening or glycerine on their work surface. But it is only a smidgen. In fact I dip my finger lightly into the shortening and only use an amount smaller than a dime to cover a big work surface.
I haven't tried the Virgin Ice but I would like to try that one - ML from www.creativecutters.com that Labrat used. It sounds fabulous. But I find that some fondants are better for covering cakes, others for making decorations. I prefer the Wilton for decorations because it can be rolled paper thin and holds up for roses and such.
I used to make my own, but I don't see any savings and it is a heck of a lot of work. I am not keen on the marshmallow fondant for making decorations either.
Heehee, I am difficult to please!

No I haven't. I haven't tried a lot of the pre-made fondants. I don't like working with marshmallow fondant for making decorations like roses or braiding and such, again because I don't find it elastic enough.
But I have noticed that a lot of people that use marshmallow fondant and other brands, don't get their flower petals and such as thin. I suspect that part of the reason that the Wilton works so well for this is because there is a hardener in it.
I am not really keen on the Wilton Gumpaste Mix, I found it difficult to work with. I am going to try some other mixes to see what they are like.

Is it due to the type of fondant or the fact that those people may not be making the edges of the petals thin? I did not have any problems using Virgin Ice and rolling it out thin. I just had to adjust how I handled it when it came to shortening and not drowning it with water on The paint brush LOL..

Umm creative cutters why are the prices on the website being quoted in U$. It's a Canadian company right? With a branch in NY? Hmmmm....

They are a Canadian company with a warehouse on the New York State side. But Canuck orders are shipped from the Canadian store. I think there is an area for a currency conversion or Canuck prices, but I cannot remember.
Yes, I think most people do not roll or ball out the petal edges thin enough. But I don't like working with marshmallow fondant for these types of things. I find most people make their leaves very thick, almost cookie cutterish. It is so easy to get a more natural leaf by thinning it out a lot.
Anyway, I do hear that Creative Cutters is wonderful to deal with no matter where you live!

Awwh, thanks Traci! It was a very old-fashioned cake, I know, but sometimes I really like to do things the old traditional ways. It is such a joy to be able to do these things with my daughter. Now that she is an adult and out on her own, these are the times that build memories for both of us. Side-by-side, chatting away, more like friends. I guess because I was so close to my own late mother, she was my best friend ever and I would hope to establish this same kind of relationship with my own two daughters.
I remember as a adult, sometimes my mother would iron a blouse for me or do something like that, that a mother would do for a child. I always knew it was just an act of love, it wasn't that I couldn't do these things for myself but Mom was doing it for me, to give me a bit of free time. It always meant so much to me. Mom always baked pies and when she got elderly and ill, I became the pie baker because she had passed this on to me. I suspect my youngest will become the baker and my oldest will do the family dinners that will keep the two girls together after I am gone. I guess this is how traditions are passed on and we live in memory.

I think that is so sweet! I think my daughter will definitely share decorating with me someday...or at least I hope. It is fun when we decorate cupcakes and stuff together for her friends...she is so creative!!! It sounds like you have a very special relationship with your daughters. icon_razz.gif
