I got a call yesterday from the lady that I made this cake for. She told me when she came into her reception (she had not seen the cake until then), that when she saw how beautiful the cake was, she almost started crying .. she told me it was even more beautiful than she ever could have imagined... I told her thank you and thank you for calling me to TELL me that!! It's not often you get someone to call you and tell you that your cakes are reallly wonderful... I know how busy it is for brides.. and most leave for their honeymoons straight after the reception... but I thought it was so special that this lady took the time while on her honeymoon to call me to tell me how much she enjoyed not only the look of her cake, but the taste... I also made the groom's cake (chocolate/chocolate chip) and she said every piece of it was eaten... I don't know about all of you, but it makes my day and gives me such a good feeling when given such compliments such as the one I got yesterday icon_smile.gif

Thanks Cathy! Things are slowly returning to somewhat normal .. there isn't a store open yet beyond 5:00 p.m. here though .. It makes it really hard to buy groceries when you don't get off work until 5:30 p.m. everyday lol .. but I know we'll get back to where we were in time .. I try to keep thinking of that and try to just be patient icon_smile.gif

thanks TC for letting everyone know what was going on here too !! I appreciate your help!

Thanks so much charlieinMO icon_smile.gif I had this lady's cake all baked and frozen before Rita and lost it when we lost power.. I also lost all the flowers I had made .. they melted.. so the flowers I made for the cake wasn't as pretty as the others were but it was all I had time to do at the last minute.. and I was determined to get this lady's cake for her since she had to be so disappointed at not being able to have her wedding as planned because of the hurricane ... I was glad to do it all over again for her and I'm glad she liked it.. that's the most important thing icon_smile.gif

I Love the cake. It was wonderful that she took time out to call and thank you for you work. It's always lovely when people remember small things like that. What type of flowers did you make? Sorry I could not determine what type they were. Keep up the good work.

Adven68:
Perhaps what you view as negative feedback may just be another person's honest opinion. I am sure there are plenty of times when you have expressed your opinion. It's always good to get some negative feedback because it lets you know what areas you need to or can improve on. I personally dont mind getting a few negative feedback comments I take those comments and use them to improve myself and my work.

I am truly shocked to discover that it is unusual for someone to call and sing your praises. I guess nowadays people only pick up the phone to complain. icon_sad.gif Beautiful cake. And yes, I made sure my MIL called to tell my wedding cake baker that everyone raved about how delicious the cake was. thumbs_up.gif

I believe that even the most constructive criticism can be worded with "taste." No pun intended. icon_smile.gif So, I have no problem with honest opinions. It's just honest opinions that are so honest that they can be perceived as aggressive that bother me. That's when people become uncomfortable and it's all very unnecessary.

On that note, I'd have to agree with Adven68 and Ntertaynme that positive feedback "keeps us going."

Hi Cheryl
Your cake is superb. Its really very big thing that lady called you in her big busy period.
But its only because of your cake and its test. icon_smile.gif

Good Job! thumbs_up.gif I know it should be one of your unforgettable cake life memories.
We are really proud of you.

Thanks and enjoy your moments.

You are so right, sometimes people get carried away to the point where honest has an almost viscious tone.
Some people really do not want constructive criticism even though they asked for it. I learned that the hard way awhile back when a newbie had posted an unbelievably gorgeous and perfect cake on the Wilton site. It was so impressive, looked like she had been decorating for many years. I just plain loved it and was in awe. However she had displayed it on a wrinkled tinfoil covered board. So I suggested to her that her cake, if she had displayed it on a different surface, would look like a $1500 dollar cake a designer had created. I had given her some tips about how to cover her cake boards. This really offended her, you could tell by her remarks.
So I learned a lesson, you have to get a feel for a person before you offer any kind of constructive criticism. Sometimes even when it is asked for, it is not welcome.

But I am just curious, was it her idea to have such a huge table for a small cake and nothing else around it ?
thank you

You're right...everyone has their own opinion. And sometimes, as Squirelly wrote, people get offended even if it is said considerately with all the best intentions. I welcome suggestions when they are not rude. I guess everyone has their ideas of what constitutes rude. Oh well....like the saying goes...you can please some of the people some of the time....

I suppose it's Squirrelly said it best when she said you have to have a feeling for a person. My close friends and I have no problem pointing out the faults in stuff that we make. So I suppose how well you know a person has something to do with it.

Another drawback of the written word is misinterpretation. I may write something that I think is totally harmless and someone else will come along and interpret what I wrote based on how they are feeling at the moment, the lack of any physical cues from me (eye contact, facial expression, tone of voice... etc) and misinterpret what I say as being malicious.

But yes we all will voice our opinions at some point in time. Some people are brutally honest and some are more tactful in their honesty. We All like to be praised for our accomplishments. But I think we should all learn how to take something negative and turn it in to a positive that improves what We are doing. If someone walks up To me and tells me my cupcake taste like flour. I would simply thank them for bringing it to my attention and try To improve.

I suppose my point don't let a negative get you down. Take it and turn it in to a positive. Make it work to your advantage. You can only grow from it.

Very pretty cake! Congrats on being able to get back to your baking!

I can only imagine what that bride was going through. It's hard enough planning a wedding, not to mention having a hurricane ruin all if not most of your plans! Ahhhh! I'm sure that's why she was so touched when she saw "her" BEAUTIFUL cake!

Great job! It does make you feel good when you hear back. When i've done cakes for friends and didn't hear back i've called or e-mailed them and asked "how was the cake?" just to make sure! I always hear back - it was beautiful and tasted delicious! I just wish they would let me know without having to ask.

Haha, yes Princeypoo, you are right, sometimes the mood we are in when we read something also effects how we take comments. I know I have been guilty of that myself when I have been in a particularly sensitive mood. Hhmn, it isn't hormones at my age, haha, it is just plain going through my second childhood, haha!
It is nice to hear feedback though, how else can we know if someone is happy or not, if something needs improvement, if there are tricks to make things work better?
Heehee, I have only had one negative feedback from a lady who said my icing was too sweet. So the next cake I made her, I used the Whimsical Bakehouse recipe and she really liked it. I tried it on my family and friends and they hated it. Just a matter of a difference of taste.
But I find that the majority of people really do not want constructive criticism and that is a shame. Because if they really wanted it and took it and used the advice they got to get better, well they would really benefit. I guess it is like other things in life, people want you to listen, not to offer advice. I think that for many people they need to be more honest when they ask for constructive criticism. I appreciate the folks that say they would like some advice but please modify your responses as they are sensitive. At least then you know that you have to be extremely careful. It is a tough call, that is for sure!
Hugs Squirrelly
