You can get an oven thermometer in just about any supermarket (check the cooking section). If it's burning too hot, call a repair man and have him check the thermostat.

Set your oven on the desired temp and place your thermometer in the center of your oven. If your oven has a preheat then it will let you know when its at temp if not you will just have to guess. If you set it at 350 and your thermometer is reading say 365 then subtract 15 degrees from the recipe temp that should put you in the ballpark. In other words anything over 350 you need to subtract from the recipes temp. Hope this helps.

I saw one in Wal-mart yesterday for about $3 to $5! And they also have a refrigerator temp one too! Hope this can help! and that your oven gets to working right!

Be sure to preheat your oven before you put your cakes in. The oven will heat much hotter than the 350 degrees, so if you skip the preheat step, you're exposing your cake to a higher temp.

I had the same problem and called a service man out to work on the oven. He popped the oven temp knob off, and there was a little screw adjuster. Move it this way if it's too hot, the other way if it's too cool.

It cost me $100 for the guy to move the screw the right way, but at least I'll know for in the future!
