I am making a Boss Day cake for tomorrow. I want to write on it, but I can't figure out what to put. Please give me your opinion.
Here are your choices:

Happy Boss Day
Happy Bosses Day
Happy Boss' Day
Happy Boss's Day

I know that I have a teaching degree, and I should know which one it is, but I can't figure it out. icon_redface.gif (My teaching degree is in special education icon_razz.gif )

I have looked on the internet and I have found all kinds of spellings as well. At least I am not the only one struggling with this issue.

Thanks,
Brandi

I was just on a greeting card site and have seen it more then one way. Boss' and Boss's so i guess if you were giving it to your boss it would be Boss's (singular plural) and if it was a multiple of them i would go Boss'

As the queen of spelling and grammar (in most cases anyway) I am going to offer a dissenting opinion.

The s' is only used when the possessive word is already pluralized.

As in "Those are my three friends' birthday cakes."

Even though boss ends in "s," the "s" doesn't indicate a plural, so the appropriate spelling would be boss's.

Happy Boss's Day!

Good point Becky, but I would still put Boss's.

After all, even if you were making a cake for your dad & grandfather, you wouldn't put Happy Fathers' Day, would you? icon_biggrin.gif

Ali is right....I was thinking of the rule for plurals! Boss's looks weird since you don;t see it that often. I looked online and they do have it Happy Boss Day, Happy Boss's Day and Happy Boss' Day.

Isn't "bosses" the plural of "boss"?
Methinks if it's "Happy Mother's Day," then the equivalent for your boss should be "Happy Boss' Day" or "Happy Boss's Day" depending on your personal preference. The Chicago Manual of Style, which a large number or publishing houses goes by, advocates the latter (but acknowledges exceptions).

And to confuse it even more, I had this same question last year, and stopped by the greeting card dept. while shopping in Target, to see how Hallmark spelled it - they spelled it Bosses, probably because many people are shopping for cards for their boss(es?!). I'm lucky -- all of the support staff in my office get together to do one office-wide celebration, so the plural works for me.
