The top caterpillar will be molded out of candy clay or fondant. What should I do for the figures on the sides? Should I do FBCT or royal icing? I've never used colorflow, would that be something to consider? I can either do transfers or do freehand. I could also cut the images out of fondant.

What do you think is the best way to do this?

THANKS for you help!!

You could also do chocolate transfers or edible images on fondant and cut out for the side images. You could use gumballs for the caterpillar too.

Can't wait to see the cake!

if the cake is going to square like the picture, Colorflow pieces would be nice...The cake is very nice...did you design it...

because of the intensity of the colours and the "smoothness" of the images (i.e. it's not like you're doing a furry muppet like elmo), and because you're wanting to put this on the side of a cake i would lean toward cutting and assembling the images out of fondant. my second choice would be for doing colour flow (royal icing run-out work) on sugar cookies cut to shape, so that they stand up against the sides of the cake (but won't be curved and flush like you could acheive with the fondant).

for the fondant approach you could easily make several copies of your images, and cut out each feature, and use those as your cutting templates.

You can also do "cut outs" from fondant....

I like the color flow idea. the best and I don't think they would have to be on cookies

the cookies provide structural support and decrease the chances of breakage. a hardened colour flow piece isn't going to "wrap" around the side of a round cake, so unless the cake is square, having a "backing" support is something to consider, and this can take the form of a cookie, or a piece of fondant or pastillage, etc. icon_smile.gif

Thank you all for your replies. I think I'll do the fondant cut-outs because I want them to wrap around the cake. I think it might be the easiest and least time-consuming. I hope!

I am going to try to do some colorflow on a piece of fondant and let it dry inside the baking pan to get a curve. That way I can see what will be the fastest to do.

missnnaction - The cake will be round. It was just easier to create the rectangles in PhotoShop icon_smile.gif I did design it but it's a pretty easy design. I stole the images from the Baby Einstein videos.

Thanks again!!
