First and foremost, thank you to the CCers who posted Groundhog Day cupcakes last year; that's where I got my inspiration.

For anyone outside of North America & Australia:
Groundhog Day is a traditional festival celebrated in the United States, Canada and parts of Australia on February 2. In traditional weather lore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow because the weather is bright and clear, it will be frightened and run back into its hole, and the winter will continue for six more weeks.

So, happy groundhog day - I baked chocolate chip cupcakes and groundhog-shaped cookies to stick in them...... Oreo crumb 'dirt'.....

Fun!

BUMP..only because these should make you smile, even if you're having a crummy day...

Especially for my friends in PA...Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania specifically. Happy Groundhog Day!

In Ontario, our version is Wiarton Willie.

Jane - Hee hee, it's officially tomorrow, so we shall see.

Though our Australian friends should have had their guys poking up by now.

I'm from Australia and ... I don't think we even have groundhogs here. Even if we did, it would definitely see it's shadow because it is hot and sunny in February. Perhaps there's a traditional lore for us relating to wombats, they're the closest thing we have to groundhogs, only they're not as cute and like to ram people with their backsides.

Thanks RedRed, for the info. Wikipedia told me the Aussies had it, but it didn't make a lot of sense to me (they mentioned it may be specific to the Adelaide area)..anyway sounds like they are off the mark!

I appreciate everyone's comments, thanks.

swingme: Yes, I used owl cookie cutters...I thought they looked sort of ground-hoggy!

punkinpie - same result in Ontario - I hope he's right too (though we haven't had too much of a winter here yet, we've been so fortunate)
