I need to use this pan for a large cake this Sunday. Does anyone know how much cake batter it will take and any recommendations on baking one this large? If I bake it Friday, wrap it in saran until I ice it Saturday will that be okay? My plan is to transport it to the church Sunday after lunch and do the final touches there.

I use 2 boxed cake mixes for this one. Will need to bake for about 45 minutes, but always check with a toothpic because some batters are more dense than others.

It will be fine if you wrap it good after it cools.

I use the equivalent of 2 cake mixes for this one as well. I also use a heating core for a cake this size and it really makes a difference.

I think your time line is fine as that is usually how I bake and decorate.

wilton.com has a great chart for how much batter to use for different size pans and how long to bake.

I just baked that size cake this morning and I used 2 Betty Crocker cake mixes and then used an extender mix.. x2 .What that means is you add a few extra ingredients...Flour,Sugar,Baking Powder,Water and Oil and you can get an extra cup and a half of batter out of each boxed mix without changing the taste or texture. The cake baked up great a full 2 inches and then some!! I baked it for 60 minutes to allow the extra time for the extra batter. It depends on the cake mix and brand.

Here is one for the extender that I copied from another post

one cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
tsp vanilla
tsp baking powder
1 egg
.5c water (or milk)
if box says 1/3 c oil increase to 1/2

I mix all the dry ingredients together then add the rest. You still follow the box directions and add the additional ingredients on the list. Adding the fourth egg make a heavier cake, but it is still super moist. If you want a lighter cake just omit the extra egg.

I use this one because I don't bake with sour cream most of the time. My results from this extender are still a super moist cake.

If I am using a cake mix I use 2 mixes with this pan. It finishes in 35-40 minutes in my oven. It rises nicely without spilling over. I do not use the heating core with it. But I will give it a try the next time I use it.

I just made this size cake for my son's birthday I think it took 11 cups of batter.
I used the WASC extender recipe with it (it's very similiar to the super enhanced cake recipe here on CC) and 2 cake mixes. I ended up having a cup of batter left over I think....

I think it's general consensus that this pan is a two boxer. However, I do like to use 2 flower nails while baking.

Is .5c milk equal to 1/2 cup of milk?

okieinalaska is right - this pan takes 11 cups of batter, and 2 cake mixes will only give you 9-10. I also use 2 flower nails, no bake even strips.

And .5 c is 1/2 cup.

llbean,

Glad you pointed that out!! When I looked at the recipe I thought my gosh 5 cups of water or milk NO WAY!! I guess I should wear my glasses more often, I didn't see .5cups until I read your post!! I'm guessing it means 1/2cup also! I like Debbi, use 2 mixes in this pan along with 2 flowers nails greased and floured and then placed in the middle of the pan about 6 inches or so apart.

I normally use about 2 and 1/2 mixes for this pan. I think I will try the extender and see how I like it! icon_smile.gif If you do mix up 3 mixes...you can always use any extra batter for cupcakes or another cake.

LOL, yeah I think .5c would be 1/2 cup. I have never used this myself, just copied it and saved it in case I wanted to try it sometime. I should have put that in quote marks. I guess as it does look like I wrote it, OOPPPSSS. icon_eek.gif

I just use 2 cake mixes for my 11 x 15 pan but hope to try this out sometime soon on my 9 x 13 pan as that one needs about 1 1/2 cake mixes.

Briansbaker,

1 cup of Flour
3/4 cup Sugar
1 tsp Baking Powder
2/3 cup Water
1/2 cup Oil

This extender is good per 1 box mix of Betty Crocker cake mix!! Add these ingredients after you have prepared the box mix and mixed it up.

I use it all the time!!

kiddiecakes...do you add an additional 2/3 cup water and an additional 1/2 cup oil. I would like to try this but do not want to add too much oil or water. Thanks!

Yes..this is all in addition to the ingredients for the box mix!!

What I like to do is prepare the mix and beat it all up and then add all the extender ingredients and mix again!!

I highly recommend the cake matrix if you don't have it. It gives the amounts needed for many if not all different pans as well as how much icing, fondant etc.. etc. I think it even helps you with pricing.

I know I saw it posted here on CC somewhere. It's an excel program.
