Well, last week one of the Culinary students that I met over the summer ( did summer school, fried brain out..lol) collared me to PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make her a cake.

Her father was flying from Mexico and it was his birthday and he liked coconut..oh yeah and by the way could I put pineapple filling in the cake!

I was like "wha? Ok...I go home and bake a white cake and I flavor it with coconut and add shredded coconut. I make coconut pastry cream for filling and I put pineapple preserves in also..., after all the customer is always right.

I had extra cake batter and decided to try the tuna can thingie someone mentioned. Baking cakes in tuna cans for tastings. I wanted to taste this cake.

Well, I made the first one with obscure directions and the cake did not turn out from the pan, so I run and make another.

I also ice it with stabalized coconut flavored whipped cream. Well, by the time I was able to bake and decorate the second cake...she was calling me that she was on her way. I paniced and wrote with a star tip on the cake..

What looked like a nice and delicate coconut cake was ruined by my writing..oh well, I was givng it to her for free...

That's what I do at times, the first one, especially if it's a small one..it's free and you get a price list for the other cakes..lol

Well she came to my house in a rainstorm and picked up the cake...I didn't hear from her in about a week, I figured...oh oh she didn't like the cake and my school rep is trashed..lol.. Since I didn't like it and I have the first cake STILL sitting on my counter! ( my family is not eating them and hubby is not taking the little ones in his lunch bag)

Well, today we bump into each other in the cafeteria and she JUMPS on me, hugging and kissing me....saying that her father was over the moon with his cake, that it was the best cake he's ever eatten,

I was like "WHAAAAAAAA.....?"

I was like I thought you didn' t like it since I haven't heard from you...she apologized and said that she was caught up in moving from her apartment, but her father was trilled even told her that is was better than any SHE ever made for him...lol

Go figure!

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif That has happened to me several times and let me tell you, I am always relieved that they liked the product.....I make cookies, pies, and cakes, but most are just plain, not decorated....my first love is baking, my second is decorating! I always have to tell myslef, everyones tastes are different so something that doesn't tast all the great to me, someone else just flips over!

Wow, what a story! I'm SO glad she liked it. What a relief for you! It really does seem like no matter how much practice you get, there's always something new to challenge you - and it's not always possible to prepare or do it perfectly!

So the moral of your story is that this never gets better huh?? I do that and can see myself doing it 25 years from now too!!!
I always worry when I don't hear from someone about a cake....but if it was me, I wouldn't be knocking everyone over to call someone about a cake?!?
The combination does sound different but good though!!!
Glad everything turned out well!

Similar thing happened to me...

The purse cake I have posted here was for a first-time customer, for her daughter's birthday. I made the cake and my cousin delivered it. I never heard a word about how the customer liked the cake. My cousin told me that they thought it was very pretty. A week later, I saw the customer and asked her if they enjoyed the cake. Her reply, "We don't know. My daughter hasn't allowed us to cut it!"
I sure hope they didn't expect it taste good after sitting on the counter for a week!!

I guess the old saying "No news is good news!" might be applicable here...you would be more likely to hear right away if they DIDN'T like the cake!

Most people these days don't have time to call you, they probably did well to get through the occasion they ordered the cake for! Janice
