Well, after finishing a baby shower cake yesterday I put it on the counter and went to bed last night. I woke up this morning, took a peek at it to make sure nothing funky happened between the gumpaste and BC and what did I find??? ANTS!!!! I cried like a little baby!!!! We have not had any ant problems but I guess I lured them in with my icing. Funny thing is that the day before I had 2 cakes I left in the same place overnight and they were fine. So 7:00 am this morning I'm at the grocery store getting more supplies to do another cake. The good news is that I was able to rescue the gumpaste accents and the plastic pacifiers, and of course you are more comfortable with something the second time, right?? Anyway, a huge pain in my behind!! AND this was my gift to the mother-to-be...isn't always the free cakes that cause us grief?
I think the second turned out a little better.
Thanks for letting me vent!!!

I really like both the cakes, but you hit the nail on the head, the free ones always cause the most trouble. I'm glad you were able to get another done. Very cute!

Your cake is adorable. I hate those dang ants. I am having a real problem with them myself right now. I bleach the counters, wash them. Its time to put more stuff out for those things.

If you wipe your counters down with vinegar, the ants will clear out! ....another helpful hint is ants will not cross a chalk line. Something as simple as drawing a line around the area in plain old chalkboard chalk or baby powder . I use the baby powder around our sidewalks in the summer and the ants just vanish! Best part is these are all environmentally friendly products with no chemicals. Just thought I'd share in hopes these might work for you. icon_smile.gif

yes, I heard that too about the vinegar. My mom had a terrible ant problem so we filled a spray bottle with the stuff and every night before she went to bed she would spray.

I use something called "TERRO" I'm not sure how to spell it. I got it from the local drug store

I got the heads up from an exterminator when I worked in offices...and it works like a charm

The second one turned out perfectly too!!! Sorry about the ants! I fight them in the Spring and early fall. Seems like summer is too hot for them or something and winter is too cold.

Never knew about the vinegar trick! Heard about the chalk, but never can remember to get any. I will have to try the vinegar cause I think my lysol kitchen cleaner just attacts them! LOL icon_wink.gif

Glad it worked out well, Mamafrog!!!

I had forgotten that hint. I did that a couple of years ago, wiped my whole kitchen down with vinegar. No ants for months. So, with your reminder, I did my counters a couple of nights ago. Need to do them again, better this time, but it really works.

Thanks for the hint. icon_biggrin.gif

Also anything with orange oil will get rid of them too. I had trouble with ants for 1/2 a year, finally researched and found out that You have to get rid of things that attract ants outside. Even birdseed. So I quit feeding the birds and--no more ants!!!

We commend you for not going after the little icing swipers with a giant shoe. No one would have blamed you.
