I've been asked to do a few weddings in the spring and there's something I can't figure out. How do you bake samples for the customers to taste? I don't have a store, just out of my house, so if I make a cake, it's for a specific order or event...so I don't have random pieces of different flavors of cakes lying around. Do I have to bake a whole cake just for the bride and her mother to have one or two bites and then move on to the next one? Do I cut the recipe and only try to bake a cupcake? I have an idea of what flavor she wants, but I'd hate to make what I "think" she wants and then find out she hates it. I don't get it?!!? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Sam!! Welcome to CC!!

Most decoraters will chose 2 or 3 flavors and bake small 4 or 6 inch cakes for the bride and her mother to taste. If she requests anymore flavors then you should tell her you charge a fee for more testers. Most Brides narrow it down to 2 flavors anyway or already know exactly what they want!!

I have a one sided flyer with my cake sizes, prices, flavors of cakes & fillings on it. The bride will look it over & email or call me with her cake taste choices. I've only ever done up to two, cause no one wanted to taste more. I just bake 4 or 6" cakes in each flavor. You can bake more & freeze them. So many times you need just a little cake to say Thank you or Hope you feel better. They will not go to waste!

What has done the best for me was like the others have said, bake a 4 or 6" cake of the flavors they choose. But then I just simply cut up each cake into bite size pieces and set them on a tray. That way they can mix a match cake between filling options and icing options. I've also bake medium size cupcakes and covered them with fondant so they can sample that. I've never put a limit on the number of flavors, but I also have never had a bride want to taste more than like 4 different flavors. Unless they specifically state otherwise, I always make my white & chocolate cake and then ask if they have any preferences. A good question to ask your bride before the tasting is if she has a particular theme she's going for. For example my next bride is doing a tropical wedding, so we're staying away from the traditional tastes and going for more 'hawaiian' flavors.

I hope this helps, and feel free to contact me for more info!
