Let me start by saying I am brand new to this site - just found it last night. It was like discovering a full vat of buttercream frosting when I thought I was going to be half a piping bag short icon_smile.gif
I'm SO new at this cake thing but, I've had a few really successful creations which now seems to have created a monster in the family, meaning, I keep getting requests to do these incredibly time consuming and challenging (for me!) cakes.
I've been asked to create a cake that looks like a cupcake, for my niece's 16th birthday party. The theme is cupcakes and they want a large cake to go along with that theme. I'm kind of ok with how to build and decorate it (but I'll take any and all recommendations!!) but, my big problem is that I'm stuck on how to create the ridges or creases that you would see on the paper or foil liner around a cupcake. Given that the cake is going to be about 12"tall, it is really posing a challenge to me. Any suggestions from all you decorating divas would be much appreciated!! Thank you!

If you have the Wilton or Ateco combing triangle you can recreate the ridges of the cupcake liner. HTH

Maybe you can take a cupcake liner and cut it-then ice the side of cake-let crust then take the cupcake liner and make an impression all the down the side of cupcake. Just make sure to keep ridges of liner straight since cake will be so tall. I hope this made since to you and I hoped it gave you some more ideas. thumbs_up.gif

I just had that same order. I actually used a coffee filter!!!

Darn, wish I'd taken a photo. I baked a cake with a 4" layer base, then topped it with a 5" and a 6" and a 7". I iced it all in buttercream and slipped it into a coffee filter with those accordian sides. It was perfect!!

Iced the top with my biggest star tip and sprinkles & a fresh cherry with a stem.

What about icing the "liner area" with the basketweave tip. That might give the effect of the ripples. Just start at the bottom and go up straight to the top. I did this with the tree stump cake in my photos. Hope that made sense.

I have done one of these before. They are fun and cute. You'll be fine! What I did was run fondant thru my clay gun and made long strips then I cut them to the length of the cake and stuck them to the buttercream. They were seperated about 1 inch maybe. Then I covered the entired thing with fondant.

If you don't want fondant I think that combing the sides would work well.

Thank you all so much for the many suggestions. Antonia74, yes, I wish you had taken pictures, too! That's a good point, has anyone seen pictures of a cupcake looking cake? I couldn't find any on this site.
I'm going to look into the Wilton tool suggested by VickiC, and I recv'd a link where I can see one being created. Thanks for that!

Hi not sure if I am understanding u...long day lol...I am not sure about 12inches tall, but Wilton does have a Cupcake Cake pan. It is in the shape of the cupcake and it has the ridges at the bottom if I am not mistaken. I have looked at it a few times and I think I am going to get it myself. Not sure if this will help you or if it's even what u r looking for but I thought I would put in my 2 cents..lol Good luck on the cake and I can't wait to see your pics.

First welcome to CC!

I think the quickest way would be to use the cupcake shaped pan. If your wanting to do a 3-d cupcake, you could pipe alternating up the sides, one using a round tip, then one using the basketweave tip, all the way around.

What if you used freezer paper and made a couple of long folds, like a large liner. What until a crust forms on your bc and then press the waxed side of the paper to get the impressions. Good luck.
