I have just been browsing through the galleries and have noticed a lot of people referring to "dummy" cakes. What is the best thing to make them out of??

Hi! I used styrofoam forms from my local cake deco supply. Covered with Saran Wrap and then decorated just like a real cake. It gave the illusion of a larger cake without a lot of waste. Gil

they can be made out of plastic, wood, styraform. etc

I've never done one i've seen other do them for practice cakes. But i always wonder what you do with them when you're done. seems like a waste of frosting and fondant.

Misty - the fondant is a waste, but I would imagine if you use non-crusting BC you could scrape it off and use it again on another practice cake. That's what I'm planning on doing, anyway, when I get around to practicing on my dummies. Also, mine will be covered in contact paper so the icing is easy to remove.

I use them as demonstration cakes when I go to local wedding fairs. I usually have 3 wedding cakes which are fully decorated. This means I can use the same cakes for every fair. I do normally take along a spice cake and a sponge cake, both covered but not actually decorated which I can cut up and hand out as samples and I always have plenty of business cards on hand
