I'm just curious.....I have a two year old son... and latley when I have been doing cakes...I have to wait until 8:00 or 9:00 at night to decorate them, because he wants to "Help" Saturday I stayed up until 3:30am to finish a cake.

I have kids also but I guess I have been decorating since they were both babies they come and have a lick of icing and then go play....Maybe if has a DVD or something other to do...but I know it's hard when they want to help!!!

I can totally sympathize. My daughter will be three this month. And every time I start to do anything cake related, I get mommy what are you doing and then immediately following is "I help you." Luckily she is in bed at 8:00 every night. So I can bake it while she is awake and then by the time she goes to bed the cake is cooled. I just tell her that it is for mommy's work.

It's so hard to decorate with a little one around. My son doesn't necessarily want to help, he just wants me to hold him or play with him. He's 18 months old and what a handful!! I can totally sympathize with you all. But my husband is good at keeping him entertained while I'm decorating. I do a lot of decorating at night too, after everyone is asleep.

I forgot to mention... I like to give Lorryn (my little one) old tupperware bowls and an old wooden spoon. I ask her to make mommy a cake with her stuff. She will sit on the floor next to me for atleast an hour or so and think that she is helping me.

I have 4 little ones! Most of the time they entertain each other, however, sometimes I will take the tops of the cakes, that have been leveled, and use cookies cutter to cut shapes out of them. Set out a few things, 1 icing bag, sprinkles, chips, etc. Tada, they have their own "cake" to decorate. It will give you more of a mess to clean up but its amazing to see the creativeness they come up with!

I have a 3 year old son and babysit a 1 year old nephew, NOTHING gets done in this house until nap time or bedtime.

And ...I have run out of really high places to put cakes where little fingers can't reach. Right now the top of the fridge is my best bet.

I know what you mean. I have a 2 yr old son and every time I start baking, he always says he wants to decorate. Then when the cake is cooling, I have to watch him real close because he will get a chair and try to eat the cake while it is cooling. He always want me to "decorate" his finger with icing. But you got to love them. They are just curious and who knows maybe oneday he will grow up be a famous pastry chef!!!

I wrote a little story about how my little almost 2 year old (23 months now) started with her mischief as soon as I started decorating... I try not to decorate at night... I get a little panicky...

I have a 3-1/2 yr. old and a 18 month old. It's hard because I haven't started doing orders so I can't really justify staying up until 3 in the morning to do practice cakes. So, I have all these cakes planned in my head but haven't gotten to make them yet.

I have an 18 month old too and when I'm doing things like making icing (you know it gets messy), he's there to lick anything that falls on the table. He also like to eat the top of the cake that I cut off to level it, he just digs his hands into it. its funny but stressful because now that my husband is on Deployment, I have to schedule everything with the cakes around the time that my son will be sleep. When my husband was home, it was very easy to get things done, but now that its just the two of us, things get hectic. But don't feel bad. We all have the same type of issues with our kids and our cakes.

I have three children. 8, 4, & 1. The Girls are 8 & 4 and they always want to help. So I bake 2 6" cakes for them and give them some buttercream. Set them up at their small table in the corner of the kictchen and that's it. They know the rules. Once you have your cake & butter cream no bothering mommy. They even have their own tools. it works pretty good for me. When they get tired they leave. it is a huge mess to clean but I welcome the time to myself.

I think it is worth it.

I have a two year old dd also. She appeared 14 years after my last. lol Anyway, I am kind of out of practice but have found that if I put a stool up to the sink and give her lots of soap and some dishes she loves to wash while I am decorating.

She also likes her finger decorated. Sometimes I will make a bag up for her so she can decorate the counter top. YEP, it's more mess but well worth it. She has fun and I get something done.

My 3 yr old LOVES fondant.....if I give her a small piece every once in a while and she's happy. She likes to play with play-doh while I sculpt with fondant. My 6 yr old son thinks I cut the tops off the cakes just for him! They are so cute.

I know what you mean. I have three kids, 12, 4 and 3 years of age. The worst one is my 4 year old. She doesn't get the hint so now I set out stuff for her. But now I am trying to do cakes when she is in school. My youngest is easy give him a computer and he is gone for a few hours.

My suggestion is just find what they like and go with it.

My two boys are grown.

I have 4 grandchildren...6yrs, 4yrs, 3yrs and 8 months. My 3 yr. old loves to eat my icing plain.

Their mothers knows not to ask me to baby sit when I'm doing cakes.

Stephanie, you must be young at heart! Isn't it funny how you get a picture of a person in your head even though you have never met. I did not picture you with grandkids.

Both my kids (4.5 and 2) like to "help". They like to help make the icing, and usually there ends up being powdered sugar EVERYWHERE!

Thankfully they are getting to the point where they don't want to help decorate as much. But the other day I was working with fondant, and my DD decided she wanted to help, soI got her play-doh out and she left me alone! WOO-HOO!

I can't wait til she's old enough for an Easy-Bake Oven...

Yes, I am very young at heart, down to earth type of person...don't have time for stuck-up people. lol

I will tell you this, I love doing fun things, don't like fussing or arguing...better things to do with my time. lol

Alot of people tell me that I look a little like Pocohantas...no kidding...I wear my hair (which is long) plaited in a ponytail...only have my hair done if I have a function to attend.

I also try to guess what other people here look like.

My son will be three this month too, jekizer! What a coincidence. He's 3 on the 16th. When is your daughter's birthday?

Grant, the almost 3-year-old, likes to "wash" dishes while I'm in the kitchen. I have one of those sponges with soap in the handle that he uses to clean EVERYTHING in the kitchen. I swear, we have the cleanest 5 feet around the sink in North America! He climbs up on the counter and cleans the cabinet doors, shelves in there, the dishes that are ready to go in the dishwasher, the canisters, anything within reach! Jared, the 9-month-old, plays with the magnets on the fridge or tries to sneak in the other room and get in the dog dish. Poor dog can't have her food and water while I'm in the kitchen and I usually forget to put it back down when I'm done! He's also known for climbing in the dishwasher and pulling out all of the silverware and utensils. I make sure to keep the knives out until the last minute. I give him used spatulas if he gets bored. Then, the two of them can "make music" all over the place. Oh how I love my cheap entertainment!

I feel like I know everyone personally.

When I joined CC, I didn't have any idea that I would become addicted and have this much fun.

There are so many talented people here that I would love to see soar as high as they can go.

Their creations are trully magnificent...I have seen some cakes here that could give Colette Peters a run for her money if judged on cakes and not name as I feel was done last night.

Maybe we should start a thread and describe ourselves like the name game one they did.

I have two kids... with the third on the way. I'm a day time baker and a night time decorator. I have seen many a late night info-mercial during my decorating. Trying to find a balance and some peace is hard with little ones!

My 5yr old dd is very good at following instructions. She always been that way and always gets to help mommy. Yesterday we made mmf flowers for the first time. The one on the right is hers. My baby dd is VERY high needs. She pretty much interrupts everything.

I love hearing all the stories of your little ones. It reminds me of my house. I have 3 kids ages 11, 3, and 16mo. As soon as they hear the KithenAid, they want to lick the bowl. I usually give each of them a spoonful of batter and they leave me alone for awhile. As far as the decorating, I too wait until they have gone to bed. I watch a lot of Nick At Nite.

Thanks Stephanie. Bubblez is very artsy. I awoke on Saturday morning and she was decorating the inside of her shoe boxes to make homes for her beanie babies. Maybe she's watched one too many episodes of extreme home makeover?

Loved making the fondant flowers. Will now have to buy some tools. We just had a regular rolling pin and some toothpicks.

Brian my 3yr. old always wants to help.. He is always in the kitchen with me.. We have come to an agreement.. If he doesn't bother me when I'm working on a cake, he can have all the utencils to lick when I'm done. And time to time I let him add the water or turn on the mixer for me. But It works everytime! (psssttt.. I take most of it off! he'll never know) Then when the cake is done, he'll look at it tell me it's pretty and then say "no don't touch the cake, you'll get mad". He so cute he has the most serious face when he says that.. Guess he has watched others get scolded for even thinking about touching my cakes!! LOL

Well, you decide- I am a 34 year old, SAHM (for the most part, work 9 hours a week as a Vet Tech) babysit my 1 year old nephew mon-fri, take my 3 year old to pre-school 2 days a week, and do cakes in my "spare time". I LOVE to help people, and have been told I would make a great teacher. I have been ask to teach cake classes at Michael's but just can't seem to fit it in right now. I would love to in the future.
