I would like to know anything you can tell me about sweetex I have read thatsome people rave about it and others not care for it. Does it have a taste? Do you use the same amount in recipe? Does it make your icing taste like grocery store icing? I would hate to buy 50lbs of the stuff and hate it!!! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

All I know is that it's a high ratio shortening and contains less water than reg shortening. Some people swear by it. I bought a #1 tub of it last spring and haven't had the nerve to risk a whole batch of icing to try it out. It has no taste. I think I've heard pepole say they use a little less than with reg shortening. I think there is a thread on this subject in the forum's someplace.
I just saw it on a site the other day and you could buy less than #50. Maybe it was #5. It's expensive stuff. I'm sure it wouldn't make your icing taste like grocery store icing. Ü Far as I've heard it's just another brand of shortening.

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. I have used sweetex a few times, I don't make a large quantity of cakes so I usually buy a small amount from my cake supply shop when doing a cake. Heck, I didn't know you could buy it in large quantities. It looks like shortening and it's alittle softer but honestly, I don't think I noticed to much of a different in the finished product. I'm sure others will be more help as far as their experiences with it. I'd be curious to know why it would make a difference and if so, what type of difference.

I only use hi ratio shortening in my frostings. I have a sensitive nose and palate...I know its weird, and I can smell and taste crisco in my frostings where as the hi ratio it tasteless to me....granted most people won't have that problem! I also notice no greasy mouth fell with the hi ratio, and my tips and bowls are much easier to clean. I buy a 50# cube for less than $30. I suggest u make 2 batches of your frostings one with crisco and 1 with hi ratio and do a side by side comparison. This way you can buy a small quantity of the hi ratio, try it and make sure you like it before you make a bigger investment. A cake supply store in your area may carry a small 1# or 3# tub. I originally ordered mine from kitchenkrafts.com and from sugarcraft.com. Thet sell the smaller sizes as well. HTH!!
