The first time I tried to make a figure was when I saw one of Tuggy's cakes! She said that the Debbie Brown books should be helpful. So, I bought some Debbie Brown books, and, it worked! You can see some figures I put together (in my photo album) from viewing Debbie Brown's books. I feel, if I can do it, anyone can do it!!

Aine2, has had some INCREDIBLE "How To" instructions posted here before. I bet you can ask JanH and she will be able to tell you where to find the link! (JanH is a wiz with the links!!!) Or, you could contact aine2 via PM.

Hey CakesUnleashed: Your figures look great. Do you use MMF or gumpaste? I have to do some little elephant figures for a baby shower for my DIL this weekend and I am fixin' to start working on them (since I haven't done before)

And by the way 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' birthday.gificon_smile.gif

I use MMF with dry gumpaste powder. The powder gives it the clay-like consistancy that works well.

Have fun! That's what it's all about, right????

BTW, thanks for my birthday wish! That was a nice surprise!!

Hi,

if you google for clay elephants or elephant figure, you should get a bunch of already made elephants. This could help you a lot if you have a picture in front of you while making it.
also i suggest you make the body first and then, when it has dried a little add the head so the body can hold the weight.

you guys are awesome. one of the links said a 50/50 mix of fondant and gumpaste, it this the general consensus and can i add the gumpaste to the fondant that is already made? will putting them in the frig speed up the process or just mess up the fondant?

This might help:

http://forum.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-168911-.html

Don't recall anyone refrigerating it to firm it up - but I could be mistaken. However, I do remember the use of a fan being suggested.

Hopefully, someone more experienced will come to your rescue icon_biggrin.gif

Edited to remove broken link.

Just bumping this post because I don't think her question got answered, and I want to know too!

What do you add to 1 recipe of MMF to make it dry quicker? My DD and I played around with our MMF and her rather thick creation never dried.

Gumtex. I don't recall how much since I've never added it to a whole batch, so that part you'd have to look up by doing a search on the forums (sorry). Or as previously mentioned, combine a portion of MMF with the same amount of gumpaste, I did that with a rather large (3.5") solid rat figure and the thing dried like a dream. It would have surely squished and sagged into a hopeless blob if it was just MMF. That was the first time I used 50/50, prior to that I found that using gumtex solved a world of problems with getting thick figures to dry.

The other "magic tip" only works if you have a gas oven, which is to put your figures in the OFF oven to dry, even w/the oven light on, but be sure to put a sticky note or something on the oven knob or you might find yourself forgetting and accidentally cooking your work of art!
