Hi, guys!
I am fairly new to cake decorating...actually very new. I hope everyone dosen't think I'm a total idiot for asking this, but could someone expalin to me the difference in sheet cake sizes?
I know that a typical rectangle cake in a grocery store bakery is considered 1/4 sheet (roughly 13x9). So, what pan size is considered 1/2 sheet and full sheet, etc. I guess I was just always under the impression that the store bought ones were 1/2 (I never really gave it any thought until I started doing this).
I made a cake last night for a baby shower today. The pan I used was bigger than the 13x9 inch pan-almost double the size, but not quite. It was yellow cake with buttercream and was decorated to look like a baby quilt. It was really nice when I finished. I charged them $40. Was that too much?
One more thing, what do most of you charge for sheet cakes, depending on the size. And, what is the norm for a character cake? I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but I just don't want to rip anyone off and would like to be more educated when it comes to sheet pan sizes. I promise I'm not a total dummy, just never needed to know before now.
Thanks for the help! Have a good day, everyone!

hi
i have this chart
1/4 sheet (9x13) serves 20-25 ppl
1/3 sheet (11x15) serves 30-35 ppl
1/2 sheet (12x1 serves 40-45 ppl
2/3 sheet (15x22) serves 60-65 ppl
Full sheet (18x24) serves 85-95 ppl
pricing is always a good question. go to the search function and type in "cake pricing" or something like that. you will get A LOT of info
My cake sizes are the same as Ester's. I live in NJ (northeast part) and this is what I charge for a basic filled sheetcake (2 layers cake 1 layer filling)
1/4 sheet $38 1/3 sheet $48 1/2 sheet $63 2/3 sheet $85 Full sheet $110. I also offer the 12 x 18" size at $70 Maybe you can use this as a guide. I originally set my prices by checking the local bakeries. I know my product is superior to theirs, and there has never been a complaint from any of my customers about price.
