I just wanted to share with everyone that the state dept. of agriculture guy came into my upstairs kitchen this morning and certified me to run a home bakery!! It's custom orders only but that is ok! I can't believe how easy it was...he opened the fridge, opened the stove and said , "Ok, let's sign the paperwork." Anyway, I can officially start selling cakes from my home legally!! Yay!!
That is wonderful news!!!! Much success to you!!!!!! Happy Baking!!! & God bless your home business!!!!
Congratulations!!! That is so terrific!! I know that you will be full of things to do now!!
wow, that seems so painless!!!! did you have to have a seperate kitchen or did he check your home kitchen?

Thanks all!! We are not required in Ohio to have a separate kitchen, although I do because my home was a former duplex, so I use the upstairs apartment as my cake studio and kitchen. I'll keep you posted to how things are going!! Ellen

I called the state department of food safety, and they made an appointment with me to come out to my house to inspect the kitchen. (Ohio Department of Agriculture). Every state is different, though, so check online! That is where I found out all my info!!
Congratulations. I hope it is that easy here. I have contacted my local office but haven't heard back from anyone yet. I may just end up waiting until we move to another home.

Thanks! I'm an Ohioan too. While we may have to move this post to the "cake business" section, and I will go check out the Oh Ag site, tell me.....what is the purpose of going "legal" versus just baking for people on the side? What did you mean by "custom orders" only?. Aren't all cake orders "custom"?
