Has anyone ever used any form of chocolate frosting with carrot cake?If so, what were the results...did people like? I've only used buttercream or cream cheese and I wondered if ichocolate would taste okay. I'm making the cake right now and I'm deciding on the top layer so any quick input would be appreciated. Thank you.

personally, the best thing about a carrot cake is the cream cheese frosting-I know that didn't answer your question, just my opinion

butrcup: the cream cheese is my favorite with it too.Thats why I've never used anything else. To be honest, I'm being quite lazy about not wanting to go to the store. I'm making stacked cakes with chocolate buttercream frosting. The bottom layers are going to be chocolate and yellow. I don't have enough mix for the top 6" layer. I have one cake mix left and its carrot. I really don't want to go back to the store...I was hoping chocolate would work. I can't beliefve I am this lazy.

Okay, I think I'm gonna go for it.What's the worst that could happen? Please don't answer that. I'll let you guys know how it works out. Now, I still have about an hour and a half before I'm going to frost the cakes...if anyone has had a bad experience with this combination now is the time to let me know. icon_biggrin.gif

Look at it this way - chocolate & cinnamon go together, at least for some people. I personally can't stand it. So your basic flavors will go together, just might not suit everybody's taste.

I really think that chocolate icing would take away from the carrot cakes taste. Cream cheese & carrot cake go hand & hand! Can't have carrot cake with out cream cheese. I love chocolate but ohh that sounds nasty on carrot cake. I do know that Duncan Hines makes a chocolate creamcheese frosting. That's the only time I have ever seen choco creamcheese before. I've tasted it & it has a bitter sweet taste. I didn't really like it. I think I'll stick w/ cream cheese. icon_smile.gif

Just a quick update on this: They loved the chocolate on the carrot cake. My dad catered the rehearsal dinner and had to call me right away and tell me one of the men said it was the best cake he ever had.(Maybe he had too much to drink icon_lol.gif ) They were saying how creative I was for thinking of chocolate with carrot. Maybe it does pay to be a lazy procrastinator some days! Thanks guys! Glad I tried it.

I am glad it worked out for you. I am also lazy and probably would have used the chocolate frosting so I would not have to go back to the store. For example...I thought everyone was finished with calling for orders. Then I got another order today for...of all things...italian cream cake!!! I have been sharing Cheryl's recipe with some of you here...but did not have the ingredients. I really did not want to go to the store AGAIN!!! So I made due with what I had...By the way...I have never even made Italian Cream Cake!!!! So...I mixed up 2 butter pecan and 1 coconut cake mixes...I had a half a bag of coconut and threw that in. Put several heaping teaspoons of mexican vanilla and mixed it all up. So...that was my version of Italian Cream Cake...just so I did not have to make another trip to the store!!! I sure hope they enjoy it!!! Sorry to ramble...but this post reminded me of my day today! icon_smile.gif

Thats funny Traci. I'm sure they will like the cake...it sounds delicious!! I have had many of those days. Sometimes when I run out of things I have to be creative. One time I didn't have enough powdered sugar for the icing so I threw in some peanut butter with it to give it texture and everyone's been requesting that frosting ever since. Thankfully, most of the people that order from me give me a choice of what I want to do with the cake so they never know what it was going to be originally. Otherwise, I might have to get off my lazy butt and go to the store. icon_biggrin.gif

ge978....the lady came to pick up the italian cream cake earlier. She did like the way it was decorated and probably will never known how I came up with that recipe. I think your peanut butter icing sounds like something I would do!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Traci,
I was just looking at your photos - There is not one lazy bone in your body!! Those look like they took alot of time. Of course the lady loved how you decorated the cake - all of your cakes are gorgeous. You will have to let me know how she liked the taste. I swear some of my best cakes are coming from my mistakes.Go figure!
