You can certainly use fake flowers but I would still use the spikes if you plan to push them into the icing!

If for any reason I have to push anything into my cakes, I insert sanitary straws into my cake, they come with a paper wrapper and when I peel it away I'm hoping they are sanitary..lol..then fill with a little icing.

Then I wrap a little seran wrap around my wire, stem or lollypop stick and insert it into the icing filled straw.

Pipe some decorations around to hide the straw and I'm done.

But, I try NOT to stick ANYTHING into my cakes. If I must, then I make the top layer a styrofoam form.

I take a 1/2 styro ball, place it on a small board or cake topper bottom and cover it with icing, then...I can insert to my hearts content!

Do you have any concerns setting them on top without the wires with a little frosting to hold them on? Does that create an issue?

For me....Silk flowers have dyes, I don't know WHERE they are made and what kinds of dyes are used....

and the real flowers...well, let's not even talk about the pesticides, chemicals...and stuff they get dunked in ...absorbed..and or washed with...

Organic flowers? Well...the last time I looked...they were loads that are fertilized with ..denatured poo...so...No...I'd rather use the "inedible gumpaste" flower that I make myself...at least I KNOW where MY hands have been...lol

so, if you want to "lay" flowers on your cake...Please put a bit of parchment , wax paper or even seran wrap between your cake and your decorations.

just my 2 cents..lol

If I have to use the wire stem for any reason-I wipe them down with alcohol first and then with warm water. I am not good with gumpaste flowers and have to rely on the minature roses or flowers for something. Seems to help me feel a bit better about the sanitary stuff.

Thank you. It seems time wise you can get some great arrangements but I do worry about the sanitary part.

Ceculsk..do what Nanni says...put some paper or a small decorated board between cake and flowers, glue them down with icing and you should be good to go.

Happy decorating..!
