Ok I am planning to make the deer head cake this week. I am wondering, if I use cake mixes (and possibly the extender recipe if necessary), how many cake mixes do I need? Not really sure. The directions say, "Bake two sheet cakes to size desired and one smaller cake for nose." I don't know what size sheet cakes to make either. I want the finished product to feed approximately 35-40 people. Can someone please help?

Hi MisDawn, I just made deer cake last week. It's in my photos. I didn't use sheet cakes though. I used a 10" round cake pan and the two smaller size oval pans. I didn't have any directions so I sort of had to wing it. I made sure to fill the round cake pan a little more than usual so it would have the hump in the middle (for the white part of the deer's chest). I used the bigger of the ovals to cut the head shape and the ears. I used the scraps from that to form the bumps for nose and eyes. I leveled the smaller of the oval cakes and put the "hump" part on the round cake to give the chest a little more height and definition. The rest of the smaller oval cake went into the freezer.

My deer cake definitely needs some improvement, but I was happy with it being my first attempt. My friend and her husband were very pleased with it. Next time, I'll make the eyes a little better and the brown frosting lighter. I think it was too dark. Anyway, good luck. I hope this helps.

Oh yeah, sorry! I neglected to answer your original question. I used two cake mixes. No extenders. I use about 1 1/2 cake mixes for 11x15 sheet cakes. The rest of the batter goes into a smaller pan, usually round or cupcakes, for later use.

I have never tried making this cake yet (yikes!) but would love to try one day.....when I get the nerve up. I was told to use whatever size you wanted....depending on how big you want it...the best person to ask about this is flavurdfun she has all the directions.....maybe you could PM her...
Good luck make sure to post a pic when your done I can't wait to see it!
