I am trying to make a "keg" cake. I iced it in white bc, then painted it with silver luster dust mixed with some lemon extract. It didn't look silver, just gritty. Then I added a touch of black to the dust/lemon combo and painted that on, and it turned a bluish color. What SHOULD I have done?

Is there anyway, at this point, to make it look silver like a keg? I have to leave here in 40 minutes with the cake, PLEASE HELP!!

Have you tried just dry brushing it? I have only used silver on fondant and it looked a little grey so I brushed Super Pearl over it to make it shine.

I would suggest the same as katy625. or brush on the silver dry.

She's right. First, DON'T PANIC. Second, dry brush super pearl over it. Third, don't stress trying to look at one little part at a time, if the cake isn't perfect, so what. If it has the overall appearance that you need, then that's what we go for. Now, take a deep breath and go now! icon_smile.gif

I did try dry brushing it with the little bit of dust I had left, but since the cake was still moist from the lemon extract it seemed to get absorbed in. AAAGH! Too late to not panic.... I will post a pic of it later today. *SIGH*

A word of advice for the future: A lady in a bakery once told me that all her cakes were done and ready to go the day before they were due: and I found this to be very sound advice. You never know what last minute nonsense will befall you. Good luck kiddo! icon_biggrin.gif

Alright, here it is. Ugh. I definitely should have done a practice cake beforehand.

I iced it in white buttercream (should have probably made it grey first), then painted it with a lemon extract/silver luster dust combo. It didn't make it look silver, just gritty. So I added a touch of black (thinking black & white make grey), uh...it doesn't! icon_cry.gif

It was a chocolate chip cake (3 layers - each torted w/ bc). It did taste very good, EXCEPT for the lemon taste from painting the outside. Maybe I should use water? Vanilla Extract? Not do this kind of cake? icon_lol.gif

AND the Pump/hose thing was fondant/gumpaste which cracked, then broke in half so it looked like poop on the plate! Sheesh.

Don't worry sweetie, we all have our "cakes from Hades." I call them live and learn experiences. Just think of how cool the new and improved version will look! icon_wink.gif
