I am new to cake decorating (love it, by the way, very satisfying). I have never used fondant ,so I would like to make a cake to practice. Something whimsical for my kids to enjoy, maybe. Any thoughts anyone? icon_confused.gif

Hi 2boysmom! Welcome to the VERY addicting world of cake decorating icon_wink.gif

As a first suggestion, I would start with a round or oval cake, they are the perfect "beginner" shape to practice covering a cake with fondant. Square or rectangular cakes can be tricky with the corners the first couple of tries.

Maybe it would be fun to go with a "shape theme," like different sized stars, hearts, or circles that you (and your boys!) could cut out with cookie cutters or a pizza cutter and practice adhering the shapes to your fondant covered cake with water or an extract. Or, it would also be cute to cut out your kiddos names with letter cookie cutters and arrange them on your cake. Endless possibilities with cookie cutters!

Wrap a fun ribbon around the bottom of your cake and you'll look like a pro! Have fun icon_lol.gif
