I'm making a Quincearnea cake next month. The cakes are going to be stacked presents 6", 10", and 14". The 14" wil be the only real cake. The 6" and 10" will be cake dummies. I'm going to charge her $2.50 per(98 ppl) serving for the real cake . How much do I charge her for the cake dummies? They will be covered in MMF.

I would charge At least 50% of what you would as if it were a real cake. For me making the cake is only about 25% of what I consider my price. The other 75% is in the decoration and my time. So make sure you take that into consideration. Your time for decoration is where it really adds up.

Also don't forget to charge a deposit for your Dummies. Because if you don't get them back they can be expensive to replace.

I would multipy what the servings would be on a real cake of that size times your price per serving of the real cake and then take off 25%. As a rule they are just as costly as a real cake and require the same amount of decorating.

Leily,
If you think that the real cake part is only 25 % of the price, why would you take off 50%? (Especially since the dummy costs something too and you don't know that you'll be able to use it again.)

Bonniesido,
If you think the dummies cost the same as a real cake, why would you charge less?

I'm tying to understand. What am I not getting?

I think the dummies cost as much as real cake! If you think you could use them again, why don't you charge her 50% and then add back on a $20 deposit. If you don't think you'll use them again, then I like the idea of only taking 25% off.

Wait! Obviously I just don't get it.

Tastycakes,

If you think the dummies cost as much as real cake and you are sure you would use them again, then charging just a bit less makes sense if you add on the deposit, which they will get back when they return the dummies. A deposit should be your replacement cost plus something for the trouble of having to go replace the item.

However, if you know you won't use them, and you think it costs the same, why charge 25% less?

What am I not getting? This is making me crazy!

Let it go itsacake! There are bigger things in life to worry about. (I'd rather just make real cake anyway and have extra. Icing dummies sucks because they are so light.) She didn't say she won't use them again! That's what we need her to tell us!

I charge the same for dummy cakes....I have a wedding in apr 06 and the girl needed dummy cakes I told her it was the same price she said ok!

Thats just me! then she asked about the sheet cakes and I told her its the same price....but in general i think my prices are low in comparison to other out theier so she knows she is getting a good deal anyway

itsacake, when I take the 25% off I do not plan to ask for the dummy cakes back. And as to why I charge less I guess it is because I know they just can't eat a dummy cake. I think in the end we all just feel a little different about what we sale and some are willing to do more for less. chikie, I am not sure what you decided to do but hope my post was not confusing. If you are not getting your cake dummies back you may want to charge full serving price. Good luck!
