Attaching Royal To Buttercream

Doing another anniversary cake, and they want drop flowers in royal icing attached to buttercream. Would I just use a dab of buttercream on the back of each one before I attach...will that hold on the sides, or should I use royal? Please help.

As long as the flowers not too big I would think they would hold with buttercream on the sides. Maybe someone else knows for sure?

There is no reason to put extra buttercream on a cake that is frosted in buttercream. Just press your royal flowers onto the frosted cake and they will stick. They will stay for several days. As time passes they soften some but they will still hang on there. Sometimes I put a mound of buttercream on top of my cakes to give my flowers a raised look.

Bonniesido...even if the icing is already crusted over they will stick? The last thing I want is for the flowers to fall off during transport, etc. Only the 2nd wedding/anniversary tier cake I have done, and want to do a really good job.

I just finished Wilton Course II and we used a dab of buttercream to attach royal icing flowers to buttercream frosting. It worked beautifully.

...I was told to use a dab of BC icing to attach the flowers in my Wilton class as well...especially if the BC has "crusted" a bit as you have mentioned....

HI, I usually have my flowers made and ready to put on the cake, but if you need to wait a while before you put your flowers on you may need to add a bit of buttercream. I remember once I had chilled a cake and when I started to add the royal flowers they did not want to stick. After a brief panic I put a little buttercream on the back of some and on some of them I took a wet finger and smoothed over the crusted area. Adding buttercream sure can't hurt as long as its not enough to hide some of the flower after you press it in. Good luck! I'm sure your cake will look great and you will do fine!
